Par POE LARA. Lara Poe's (b. 1993) good-humoured Contradanse for eight wind instruments employs slightly off-kilter dance rhythms to create a rhythmic background structure to the piece. The melody lines constantly change timbre as they move through different instrumental combinations. Lara Poe is a Finnish-American composer who is currently based in London. Her works have been performed across a wide range of venues throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. Her piece Kaamos, which she wrote for the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, was recently nominated for a Ivors Composer Award in the Large Scale Composition category. Kaamos also was selected by YLE Radio Finland to represent Finland at the International Rostrum of Composers 2021 in Belgrade, Serbia. Poe was the 2019 Tanglewood Music Patricia Plum Wilde Fellow and represented Finland at Ung Nordisk Musik 2019 in Piteå. Mixed Bag No. 4-Mixed Bag. This highly acclaimed series provides a real opportunity for woodwind players of mixed ability to play together. It will work with as few or as many players as you like! Each arrangement will work with just three orfour main parts. Part 1 is quite demanding but Parts 2 & 3 are easier. These parts can be played by just one or several players - it’s up to you! Optional ‘filler’ parts are also included for beginners. These have very simplerhythms and notes (clarinet parts are all below the break) allowing young players to gain experience in ensemble playing. Mixed Bag gives you a score and double set of parts. Chansons de Normandie was commissioned by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and premiered on BBC Radio 2 as part of their D-Day broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on June 6th, 2014. This 4 minute piece is based on three traditional Normandy folk songs: Les Metamorphoses, Le marchand de velours and Le corselet. Par HOUBEN KEVIN. Guardian Angels dépeint la légende du pasteur Louis Henri Antoine Bähler en utilisant entre autre le Psaume 34. La partie nord-ouest de la région de la Veluwe, et en particulier Oldebroek (Pays-Bas), possède une riche tradition religieuse, dont témoignent les bâtiments monumentaux de l'église. Ils racontent une histoire mouvementée, dans laquelle le pasteur Bähler a joué un rôle particulier. Inspirées par son arrivée comme pasteur en 1870 dans la ville voisine d'Oosterwolde, deux grandes communautés ecclésiastiques ont vu le jour, avec les bâtiments religieux typiques. Cependant, la région a aussi connu des troubles sociaux importants. Cette composition est une méditation sur la personnalité marquante du pasteur et en particulier sur l'histoire de la protection des anges: Un soir, le pasteur Bähler avait prêché à Oldebroek et marchait le long du sentier de l?église entre les champs pour aller à Oosterwolde. Le temps était sombre et orageux. Certains opposants de Bähler lui avaient tendu une embuscade et voulaient le noyer dans un fossé près du sentier. Lorsqu?ils virent qu?il n?était pas seul, mais en compagnie de deux autres hommes, ils abandonnèrent leur projet. Le lendemain, Bähler rencontra ses adversaires. Ceux-ci regrettaient ce plan qu?ils n?avaient heureusement pas pu mettre à exécution. Lors de cette rencontre, Bähler affirma catégoriquement avoir été seul à marcher sur le sentier de l?église la veille plutôt qu?accompagné par deux autres hommes. On en conclut qu?il avait été protégé par des anges. Si le Psaume 34 est au centre de cette composition, c?est en raison de sa puissante mélodie mais aussi parce que le texte du verset 4 de la version rimée de ce psaume s'accorde bien avec la légende extraordinaire du pasteur Bähler: ?L'ange du Seigneur monte la garde ?autour de ceux qui le craignent,?il les met hors de danger.? Une deuxième cellule mélodique et harmonique est la transformation musicale du nom ?Bähler?. Cette cellule est utilisée en variation d?accords de tierces majeures et mineures, tant comme idée principale que comme apothéose, mais également comme cellule d'accompagnement ou de motif de pont entre d'autres constructions mélodiques et rythmiques. Flexible Woodwind Ensembl-This suite of folk songs is scored for woodwind quartet and a single unpitched drum. Although the nominal scoring is for flute two clarinets and bassoon the piece has considerable inbuilt flexibility of scoring. The options for instruments on each part are as follows: Part 1: Flute oboe or soprano saxophone Part 2: Bb Clarinet or alto saxophone Part 3: Bb clarinet alto saxophone or tenor saxophone Part 4: Bassoon bass clarinet or baritone saxophoneThe piece may be played by any combination of these instruments. Where necessary some passages have been transposed down an octave in the soprano alto and tenor saxophone parts.Where this occurs the lower pitch is also included in the score. There are also a few notes in the bass clarinet part of the March which have been taken up the octave through necessity; similarly this is indicated in the score.The drum should be unsnared and of medium low pitch. A bodhran tenor drum low tom-tom or floor tom are suggested although in the end it is up to the performer!The folk songs used in the piece are not particularly well known these days. 'Gan to the Kye' is an example of the rich culture of traditional music from Northumbria. The title means 'Go to the cows' and is a love song in which the herdsman asks his lover (in a gesture possibly lacking somewhat in romance) to accompany him whilst he tends his herd of cattle.The second movement is a setting of 'Rosemary Lane' a beautiful Somerset song. It tells of a serving girl ill-used by a sailor; as so often in traditional music the beauty of the tune is quite at odds with the unpleasant circumstances related.'Gently Johnny' is a good-humoured song in which the enthusiastic suitor is teased by the object of his affections: he is asked to cool his ardour whilst at the same time being left in no doubt that his attentions may be as bold as he wishes! The middle section uses another song this time from Middlesex called 'Jack Williams'.
