The skill and thrill of auto racing is captured musically in this piece via its infectious groove and exciting syncopations. Written in one continuous movement, its sections will help you imagine sitting behind the wheel of a powerful and agile racing machine over the course of a breathtaking speed contest. Students performing this piece will enjoy discovering that the palindromic nature of the piece, including the title, Race Car (which reads the same forwards and backwards), a pervasive syncopated ostinato rhythm, A-B-A form, and a fugato section at the center of the work (Pit Stop), in which virtually each instrumental part is a palindrome! (3:25).

Preface The three movements of the quartet may be perceived as three different expressions of an unstable core: an inherent unrest leads to frequent changes of direction. The first movement is full of dramatic contrasts: it is followed by a second movement, whose basic mood of meditative rest is challenged by occasional centrifugal utbursts, while the third movement takes the inherent conflicts to a higher level, contrasting material of introspective lyricism with excessively pathetic moods. The final way out is a retrograde one, (back) into the source: through a constant accelerando-diminuendo the piece disappears into a vanishing point. The into the source of the titlemay be visualized as a reversed fountain-action: the broad fan-like spread of the first movement, a more coherent-solid second movement, and finally - in the third movement - a return-run, ever more vehemently, like a suction into the spring itself ... The musical motifs are varied: there are traffic-situations (which I heard!) with stomping and machine-like rhythms in different, but simultaneous tempi, and there are more abstract upwards and downwards half-tone-scales, with changing accents, creating glimpses of melodies. INTO THE SOURCE, String Quartet No. 9, was composed on a double-commission from the Orion Quartet and the Vertavo Quartet. The premiere performances took places in Santa Fe in 2002 and in Oslo in 2003. Per Norgard.

This vigorous and syncopated selection features a modern twist on the fugue, with jagged and dramatic themes and an unrelenting forward momentum. Based on the image of centrifugal force, your students' heads will spin at the rushing intensity of Mr. Daniels's dynamic musical forces. A real joy to play. 2:51.

Redolent of the work of Dmitri Shostakovich in its musical language, Evgeny Kissin's String Quartet op. 3 comprises four strongly contrasting movements: on the heels of the stately “Adagio liberamente†comes an extremely lively “Allegro inquieto†that wanders between dynamic extremes and bristles with glissandi. The third movement, marked “Largo drammatico,†is sustained by an insistent, heavily rhythmic dotted motive, while the final movement shifts from the introduction, marked “Pensierosamente, ma mantenendo strettamente il ritmo puntato,†into a brilliant finale, “Molto allegro e sarcastico,†that is suffused with elements of fugato and, like all movements, informed by dodecaphonic harmonies. This demanding fifteen-minute work was composed in 2015-16 and recorded for the first time on Nimbus Records by the Kopelman Quartet.

John La Montaine's Fuguing Set for Piano Solo consists of seven pieces: Prologue, Fugue in G, Pastorale, Fugue in D, Cadenza, Fugue in C, and Epilogue. It was originally composed in 1965. Jocelyn Mackey (Pan Pipes, music critic): Amazing contrapuntal skill. Fuguing Set explores three different fugal techniques: the traditional tonic-dominant relationship of subject and answer, modal treatment of the subject and its inversions (all modes, including the Locrian appear), and chromatic procedures. A Prologue and Epilogue frame the set, while a Pastorale and Cadenza appear between the fugues. These pieces appealed immediately to this reviewer, who feels that many people who may not care for contemporary music will find them more than satisfying..

Bach's B minor Mass is among the greatest and most ambitious works of all time. The various stages of composition of the Mass occupied the composer for over two decades: beginning with the Sanctus (1724), by way of the Missa of 1733, to the remaining movements of the Ordinary, which were composed during his last years. Thus the Mass, in its wealth of forms with arias, duets, as well as concertante and fugal choruses, displays the essence of Bach's skill and personal style. The greatest musical work of art of all times and all peoples (to quote the enthusiastic Hans Georg Nageli, who first edited the Mass in 1818) and one of the most demanding choral works in the repertoire is presented by Frieder Bernius, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart in a stellar recording based on the principles of historical performance practice (Carus 83.211). As a lesson and lecture piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatine op. 35, created in 1969, accompanied many young musicians on their way. Sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. Warmth and sparkling rhythm characterize the three movements: inthe powerful maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme; the recapitulation ends with an impulsive fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody about spherical harmonies of the piano. As the highlight in the Finale vivace, playful lightness, marching rhythms and dramatic increases replace each other in quick succession; wild arpeggios lead to the end. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and cello were already familiar. For the 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey & Hawkespresents the work in a revised, revised edition. A repertoire enrichment for beginning instrumentalists are the first available versions for alto and tenor saxophone, which the composer made himself in the 1990s.

This set of four works, all in minor keys, is unique for the energy of the fugal writing, the passionate chromaticism of the slow movements and the playful, asymmetrical phrasing of the final Minuets. The scoring leaves open a range of performance possibilities, from one to a part with or without continuo (following the varying density of figured bass and the instruction senza cembalo) to orchestral performance as suggested by the English Concerto arrangements.

This arrangement adds an immediately appealing freshness to a familiar hymn tune FOUNDATION, while keeping its colonial American flavor. Each verse is set differently: the first in simple hymn-style, the second in the manner of a bold fugato, the third as a lilting canon, and the fourth as a repeat of the first with a soaring descant.
