Tango Tzigane - Jealousy-Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane - Jealousy) - Jacob Gade's classic arranged for Piano Duet (four hands) by conductor Esther Bobrova Lange. From the Preface: It is a common misconception that Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane) was written for the movie ”Don Q”. The piece was also played at the movie premiere in Paladsteatret on September 14th 1925 but there was no jealousy-based drama in the movie. Nonetheless the melody was well suited to the Zorro legend in a Mexican setting. But in the book “Jacob Gade – et eventyr i musik” (a fairytale in music) by Jørgen GramChristensen one learns that in a 1956 interview Jacob Gade recounted the incident in 1925 which concerned him very much: “One day the magazines featured a dramatic description of a jealousy-based murder and the word “jealousy” stood for me as a title with which the music became more and more attached.”There are many different arrangements of “Tango Jalousie” but I have always found that there was a need for a piano four hands version of this wonderful piece. In the process of working out a piano four hands version I used the full orchestra score and made sure that the most essential orchestra parts were included. Also the melody parts and accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. (Esther Bobrova Lange)

Version for Piano four-Hands-Grieg?s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen?s drama ?Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions such as ?Morning Mood? and ?In the hall of the Mountain King?.Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two Orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for Piano solo and Piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for Henle when they werepreparing this Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run the second suite contained another movement the ?Dance of the Mountain King?s Daughter? which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. Thischarming dance appears in the appendix to this edition printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for this edition and alsoprovided the new fingerings.

Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

Arrangement for Piano Fourhands-In the 19th century arrangements for Piano four-hands were usually versions which people played at home if the works could not be heard in concert. In cases such as these Brahms did not however just make functional versions butcreatively transcribed his works for the piano. As the composer he allowed himself greater freedom than arrangers for publishers did. In this form his arrangements greatly contributed to the success of his works in musical life inthe 19th century. It is on account of their creativity that Brahms’ arrangements have attracted new interest in musical circles over the last few decades. Slavonic Dances op. 72 for Piano Four-hands-With the publication of the second volume all of the ?Slavonic Dances? are now available in Urtext. Following the resounding success of the first series op. 46 which immediately made the composer famous around the world thepublisher urged him to write more. Dvo ák only got down to work on them eight years later announcing ?I think these will be very different?. And indeed the difference cannot be missed: the second series is singled out bygreater formal freedom and more colourful harmony. Whereas Opus 46 is for the most part characterised by sparkling high spirits (HN757) in Opus 72 there are also quieter notes: melancholy and poetry find their way into theexuberant dance.

Following the great success of the Slavonic Dances Op. 46 the publisher Simrock was extremely happy when Dvo ák presented him with the prospect of a new cycle for Piano Four Hands the ?Legends? inOctober 1880. Barely a year was to pass before the new work was published. Shortly before this Dvo ák and Simrock had travelled to Karlsbad with the proofs where the Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick was taking thewaters. They played through the work together and proofread it. Hanslick was delighted and even became the dedicatee of these ten charming pieces. Later he wrote in a review of the Legends that one felt a?sense of pleasure? that ?feels doubly good in our pessimistic times?.
