The new choral anthology Christmas carols of the world will enrich the Christmas repertoire for choirs, with lots of exciting choral arrangements of a selection of 85 international Christmas carols. It is edited by Volker Hempfling and contains arrangements by composers from 23 countries in their original languages, including John Rutter, John Høybye, Mark Sirett, Wolfram Buchenberg, Matti Hyökki and Fredo Jung. The settings for mixed choir a cappellare extremely varied, ranging from easy to difficult- some have accompaniment for keyboard instrument. ' Ave verum was commissioned early in 2011 by Edward Rowntree for the birthday of his father, John Rowntree, director of music at Douai Abbey in the UK. My aim was to write a piece both short and simple, suitable for regular liturgical use. There are, of course, many wonderful settings of this text already, not least those by William Byrd and Edward Elgar, both of which I sang as a boy. In this instance I felt their presence as a fellowship and, having their music in my head while writing, I was encouraged rather than daunted. In fact, if you listen with this in mind, you may hear a phrase or two in homage to the great masters.' - John Duggan An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Born in 1963, John Duggan was a chorister at Westminster Cathedral and studied music at Oxford. While still a boy, he dreamed of writing in the great European choral tradition of Victoria, Tallis and Palestrina. His vocal music has delighted both singers and audiences across Europe and the United States, and he composes regularly for film and dance. He has composed for a number of choirs including Commotio, Westminster Cathedral Choir, the Hildegard Choir and Sospiri, and has written commissions for the Edington Music Festival, Crossover Intergenerational Dance Group, Oxford Youth Dance and The Oxford-Grenoble Association. John regularly performs as a singer and choral director and works as a recording engineer and producer. He has recently been appointed as a Creative Arts Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford. / Choeur SATB

The six collections of 'Vierstimmige Motetten und Arien' published by Johann Adam Hiller offer a selection of motets, mostly from the second half of the 18th century. They show us the products of a new age of achievement in which the motet was again able to flourish after this genre had led only a shadowlike existence for more than a century. The editor of those collections, Johann Adam Hiller, was active as a composer of Singspie, editor of various musical periodicals, leader of the Gewandhaus concerts, University Director of Music, musical director of the Neukirche, and finally, from 1789, Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Upon Hiller's assumption of the office of Thomaskantor theolder motets were replaced in Leipzig church services by contemporary compositions. Printed texts which have been preserved show that Hiller's collections were used widely. A Critical Report from the editor, Uwe Wolf, with additional information concerning the motets and their composers, will be published to cover all the collections. / Mottet / Répertoire / Choeur Mixte

Das Chorbuch 'Deutsche Volkslieder' präsentiert 123 Lieder in stilistisch vielfältigen Sätzen. Etwa zwei Drittel der Sätze sind von namhaften Komponisten eigens für dieses Chorbuch geschrieben worden. Außer Beispielen in eher traditioneller Harmonisierung finden sich leicht 'jazzige' Bearbeitungen [z. B. Matthias E. Becker, Peter Schindler, Bernd Englbrecht] sowie Sätze mit anderen modernen und pfiffigen Stilelementen [z. B. Sylke Zimpel, John Hoybye, Theo Brandmüller]. Ein besonderer Reiz entsteht dadurch, dass - mit Blick von außen - auch Komponisten aus Polen, Dänemark, den Niederlanden und Litauen Beiträge geliefert haben. Neben diesen Neukompositionen enthält das Chorbuchberühmte Volksliedbearbeitungen romantischer Komponisten [z. B. Brahms, Silcher, Reger] sowie bewährte Sätze von Komponisten aus jüngerer Zeit [z. B. Helmut Barbe, Wolfram Buchenberg, Hans Schanderl, Volker Wangenheim]. Zu einigen Volksliedern wurden Doppelbearbeitungen ausgewählt, so dass ein historischer und ein moderner Satz nicht nur zur Alternative stehen, sondern möglicherweise auch zur Alternatimpraxis einladen. / Musique traditionnelle / Répertoire / Choeur Mixte
