Par SEMLER-COLLERY. French composer, conductor and teacher, Jules Semler-Collery (1902-1988) was born to a musical father. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Semler-Collery 's works have been successful, with many of his concertos being included in the Conservatoire's list of compulsory works. Rêverie Et Scherzo for Clarinet and Piano is no exception to the composer's success. Published in 1950, Semler-Collery 's Rêverie is marked Andantino Cantabile and is in 6/8 meter. Both the Clarinet solo line and Piano accompaniment are virtousic, exploiting rhythm, tonality andharmony. A cadenza-like passage is heard towards the end. The Scherzo is marked Molta Leggiero and is staccato in 3/4 meter. Quaver and semiquaver passages are heard with the speed accelerating to a dramatic finale. This edition completes our series of all three clarinet concertos by the Swedish composer and clarinettist Bernhard Henrik Crusell. Issued in Leipzig in 1811, it was his first published work but had definitely been composed several years prior to this. With its elegant head movement and the simple and moving Adagio, it is probably the most 'Mozartian? of all of his three concertos, although the final rondo is reminiscent of Carl Maria von Weber. The editor and clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer is now presenting this charming work, between Classicism and Romanticism, on the basis of the first edition. Six easy pieces. Par MULLER IVAN. Ivan Müller was born in Reval in Russia (now Tallinin, Estonia) on 3 December 1786 and died in Bückeburg (Germany) in 1854. In 1808/09 he performed widely as a clarinet virtuoso - in Berlin, Leipzig, Wien, Paris and many other places where he also presented the new ?clarinette omnitonique? in B flat which he had invented. The system of keys in use in Germany to this day is based on Müllers invention. As a composer Müller was an exponent of the early Romantic style and wrote numerous concertos for his chosen instrument as well as this Serenade for Clarinet and Piano (or Harp or Guitar). Brahms had already announced his „retirement“ from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter apparently renewed his enthusiasm for Mühlfeld’s much admired playing and inspired him to write two clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year. Brahms and Mühlfeld premiered the works and played them in several performances until the sonatas op. 120 were first published in June of 1895. They remain pivotal works in the clarinet’s recital repertoire establishing the clarinet sonata as a distinct and viable chamber music genre. An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the sonatas‘ origins, their compositional process, pre-publication performances, their publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors start from the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death, a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century.
