A SONG FROM THE HEART is filled with lyricism and richharmonies, as the trumpet line sings and soars over a rich accompaniment.The flute version of this work was written for my dear friend Cindy Anne Broz, for herAlbany CD including first recordings of 3 of my flute pieces. Cindy was wonderfulin helping me with my flute arrangement, as I heard her lovely, bright high register– hence my putting some key passages of the piece up an octave, shaping the phrasestructures to flatter the lyrical flute sonorities.

Nico Samitz has been composing for chamber ensembles since his school days. The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes, but also of violins and oboes; in addition, the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not, for instance, play in the slow movement), so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets, horns, bassoons and low strings. If this is, nevertheless, one of Davies's most open-spirited pieces, that comes partly from the ready flights of the soloist, partly from its glockenspiel accompaniments in the outer movements (replaced by ticking claves in the Adagio), partly from the dancing character of so much of the music, and partly from the harmonic clarity, in a light region not far from C minor. A pioneer of Finnish modern jazz, Heikki Sarmanto (1939-) is renowned for his renderings of jazz numbers. No wonder, therefore, that broken chords and familiar keys resonate and sit well under the hand in the piano part of this Northern Dreams suite. The solo passages for the piano are like stylised improvisations. In addition to jazz idioms, the suite features Chopin-style arpeggios. His music is melodic and communicative, painting feelings, situations and events. Northern Dreams was originally composed with the tenor sax of Juhani Aaltonen in mind, and the solo part is a transcription of his improvisation. The solo part is also available in arrangements for alto sax, flute, clarinet, bassoon and trumpet.
