Mittlere Stimme / Medium Voice-As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically.The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first 'Hagars Klage' (D 5) dated 30 March 1811 is also his first complete surviving song. Thefirst eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811 1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied' D 23) which the only one of these songs was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131 3. His apprentice work as it were was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss' D 84) was written at the same time. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal Court and Westminster Abbey and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral ecclesiastical operatic theatrical incidental and chamber music were all enriched by his output. Come And Trip It is an aria from the 1740 work L'Allegro il Penseroso ed il Moderato (HWV 55) based on a poem by John Milton. It is a graceful movement in the Minuet style often referred to as a 'Dance Song'. It has been arranged for Medium Voice and Piano by Mary Carmichael.

BA 5786-90: Vocal score voice & piano Berlioz composed these songs in 1840–41 between the composition of Roméo et Juliette and La damnation de Faust. The poems were taken from a collection entitled La comédie de la mort by Théophlie Gautier published in 1838. The songs were for mezzo-soprano or tenor with piano accompaniment and were published as a cycle under the title Les nuits d’été in 1841. The second and fourth songs Le spectre de la rose and Absence were performed a few times at that period and Absence was sung twice in February 1843 by Marie Recio on Berlioz’s first tour of Germany. For Marie who later became his second wife Berlioz at once orchestrated the song for mezzo-soprano and small orchestra. A dozen years later Berlioz orchestrated the remaining five songs of the cycle which appeared in its orchestral form in 1856. Frank Bridge’s Three Songs for Medium Voice Viola and Piano is the second volume in a 30-volume series by The Frank Bridge Trust in association with Thames Publishing celebrating the works of Frank Bridge. This publication features the songs Far far from each other Where is it that our soul doth go? and Music when soft voices die and includes the score for Viola separately making the collaboration of the three musicians easier. Born into a family that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) entertained only a distant relationship with the music he heard at synagogue. It was only when he discovered Schelemo a rhapsody for cello and orchestra written in 1916 by Ernest Bloch that he began to understand what “Jewish music” could be. In the mid-1920s the young composer found a collection of prayers set to music among his maternal grandfather’s papers. Something clicked and from then on Jewish tradition would become a source of inspiration for Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In 1928 two years after publishing theDances of King David he wrote this Vocalise-Étude for medium voice and piano at the request of vocal teacher Amédée-Landély Hettich who wanted to include it in the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-Études published by Leduc. The piece became so popular that several instrumental adaptations were soon created published under the title Chant hébraïque (for violin and piano: AL17 713; for cello and piano: AL 17196). Divided into three sections this wordless melody opens with a “sad and impassioned” chant that appears to grieve the tragic fate of the Jewish people. A folk dance follows in which a “lively and stubborn” movement has great panache. The third section returns to the initial poignant theme before briefly reiterating the dance motif allowing the piece to conclude on a hopeful note. The composer himself would adopt this proactive stance refusing to yield to resignation when fleeing Mussolini’s anti-Semitic laws he decided to emigrate in 1939 to the United States a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later.

Lennox Berkeley's I Carry Your Heart With Me for medium Voice and Piano.'Sometime in 1970 I gave Lennox Berkeley a volume of poems by the American poet E. E. Cummings (1894-1962) since mysister Meriel Dickinson and I were commissioning him towrite a song-cycle for a whole programme of settings of Cummings. At the time he became involved with Chinese poetry and we were delighted with the Chinese Songs Op. 78.However a year or so later in July 1972 Berkeley did set a poem by Cummings. This was ‘i carry your heart with me’ from 95 Poems (1958) and he dedicated the song to the countertenorTay Cheng Jim.The manuscript leavesfew questions. Obviously the pedal sustains the sextuplet and triplet groups at the start and finish. It is possible that all the As in bar 32 of the left hand piano part should be flat although there are clashes like thiselsewhere. A few phrase-marks have been added on existing patterns.' - Peter Dickinson
