G.F. Handel (1685-1759) is considered as one of the greatest composers to have ever lived. His Violin Sonatas remain prominent in the repertoire. French oboist Louis Bleuzet's transcription of two of the composer's Violin Sonatas for the Oboe make Handel's music even more accessible and popular. G.F. Handel was a German-born baroque composer who spent the majority of his life in England. His works remain ever popular to this day and Bleuzet's transcription of two Sonatas for Oboe and Piano ensure that the composer's much loved works are more versatile. Bleuzet's edits include breath marks articulation performance directions dynamics and phrasing. For all oboists this Bleuzet arrangement of two of Handel's Sonatas is essential.

Cloud breathing is a technique in Chinese martial arts involving short, sharp inhaling breaths and a slow exhale to oxygenate the body in preparation for fighting, meditation and healing. In this work, the piano begins in the upper register with tones like wind chimes, with the oboe entering beneath. This meditative first section leads to sudden shifts in harmony under a quiet oboe melody. Activity increases, leading to an oboe cadenza and a fast section based on rapid repeated notes in the oboe with the piano accompanying with contrapuntal lines. A brief piano solo leads to fragments of melody from the slow opening, now transformed. After a fortissimo climax, the quiet wind chime opening suddenly returns. French oboist organist teacher and composer Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions which remain highly regarded to this day. Significantly the entire compilation of Famous Solos for Competitions was performed 1983 by Oboe students at the University of Washington. The first solo Colin's Opus 33 is challenging for the advanced oboist. The work addresses many technicalities including complex rhythms a range ofarticulation variations in performance directions dynamics and time signatures ornamentation and wide range among other aspects. For all aspiring advanced Oboe players Colin's Famous Solos for Competitions is an essential addition to the repertoire providing excellent audition and competition pieces.
