Many violists have grown up on a diet of Violin studies transcribed for Viola and plenty have thrived on them even though the studies are in many cases composed with melodic patterns and fingerings that suit the Violin better than the Viola. Robin Ireland's aim in composing this new study material was to write specifically for the Viola in ways which suit it both technically and tonally.The twelve concert études set out to be musically attractive pieces which in addition to addressing most basic aspects of technique will encourage the development of 'musical' and expressive playing.The set of études is unusual perhaps unique in that it covers a rangeof styles and thus provides a focus for developing an understanding of bowing and articulation appropriate to different periods of music. The first eight études move through baroque classical and romantic styles while the later études include material for developing confidence with metre change and other basic rhythmic skills and with atonality. The last étude introduces an improvisatory style of playing.The concert études should be appropriate for Viola students from Grade 8 upwards. Details of a companion volume of 'technical' études and their availability can be found at www.robinireland.co.uk. These studies are each focused primarily on a single area of technical development in many cases an area not specifically addressed in currently available study material.The new études do not set out to provide a comprehensive alternative to existing study material but rather to complement it and extend its range.

Take Your Bow is a collection of 20 concert pieces for beginner string players written by Celia Cobb and Naomi Yandell. Years of string teaching have given them the inspiration to produce pieces which will both delight and engage. Their imaginative writing strengthens rhythmic and stylistic concepts whilst employing a variety of adventurous playing techniques that students will find to be a fun and achievable challenge. The piece, commissioned by Eszter Lázár and the Hungarian Radio, was composed in 1995 on occasion of the 50th anniversary of Béla Bartók's death. Its world premiere was held on 1 October in the Hungarian Radio, performed by János Fejérvári.The fantasy-like one-movement composition resembles the structure of classical sonatina. One of Haydn's most attractive concertos from the mid seventeenth century the Concerto For Violin In C has only recently been re-discovered. In this charming concerto the soloist is accompanied by a String Orchestra a scoring which can be easily mastered by amateur ensembles. This Urtext edition is taken from the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.

In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane? and both versions remain a 'must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice.
