Without any doubt J.S. Bach?s cycle of the three Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 represents one of the pinnacles of classical European music. According to C.P.E. Bach a contemporary voice stated that there was ?nothing more accomplished in order to become a good violinist? than his father?s works. The cycle reflects the entire harmonic and polyphonic musical universe of Bach?s time, so masterfully composed that it can be rendered within the limited framework of but a single instrument the violin.
The new publication of the Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 (BA 5256) constitutes a complete revision of our older edition (BA 5116). The musical text has been edited by Peter Wollny and represents the most up-to-date state of research as published in the New Bach Edition Revised (NBArev), volume BA 5937-01. The edition is mainly based on Bach?s unusually clear autograph which is considered among the most beautiful manuscripts by the composer. All relevant secondary sources have been taken into consideration in order to clarify ambiguities. These include five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, and four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The musical text has been newly engraved with a clear and generous layout, whereby page turns and pagination have been retained from the previous edition. This allows the straightforward navigation between a copy of the previous and this new edition. The detailed Preface (Ger/Eng) provides information on the genesis of the Sonatas and Partitas, their context and the sources.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician often seen as his country’s greatest composer who now occupies a distinguished platform in the national and cultural heritage of his native Denmark. The Carl Nielsen Edition is an independent project which aims to publish all of his finished works in the version last approved by the composer. His Sonata No.2 for Violin and Piano (Op. 35) was composed in 1912 for a concert the following year by two of the composer's friends. It is scored in three movements: Allegro con Tiepidezza - Molto Adagio - Allegro Piacevole. Despite a poor critical reception after its first performance itwas for a while one of the composer's most popular works with the general public.

While the value of authenticity in the performance of Baroque music is now widely appreciated many players still feel daunted by the task of realising the unadorned melodies and basses of Corelli’s Op.5 Violin Sonatas in their original form.Fortunately Gustav Jensen’s edition of these works provides an ideal solution to the problem. Carefully fingered and bowed with the continuo sensitively arranged for harpsichord or modern piano it presents the notated elements of a spirited and musically satisfying reading while still leaving room for performers to shape their own interpretation.This volume includes sonatas No.7 and No.10 both composed on the sonata dacamera pattern and the celebrated La folia variations with which Corelli concluded his collection. Fiery and virtuosic they have remained a favourite item in the violinist’s repertoire since their publication in Rome in 1700.The solo violin part is also included on a separate insert.

J'ai composé cette Sonate pour violon seul Op.16, entre octobre 2021 et mai 2022, pour trois violonistes que j'admire et qui ont une grande importance pour moi. Le premier mouvement, dédié à Jacques Ghestem, s'inspire d'une sensation de liberté et d'un souffle spontané que j'ai ressenti en jouant Rhapsodie Musings d'Elliott Carter, issu des Four Lauds pour violon seul. Jacques Ghestem, investi tout au long de sa vie dans la mise en valeur de la musique contemporaine, m'a notamment transmis depuis mes dix ans (à travers de longues discussions, mais aussi à travers sa pédagogie) sa vision de la musique et son goût pour la musique de notre temps, tout en partageant avec moi son univers intérieur empli de souvenirs et de création musicale. Il était ainsi bien naturel de composer pour lui ce premier mouvement, dont les spécificités harmoniques et instrumentales ont été imaginées pour son dédicataire. Le deuxième mouvement est composé pour David Grimal, violoniste que j'ai toujours admiré depuis mon enfance. Son originalité, sa liberté, ses interprétations fougueuses sur scène ont continué de m'émouvoir et de m'inspirer lorsque j'ai participé comme violoniste au sein de son orchestre Les Dissonances. C'est lors de son interprétation de L'Aurore, issue de la cinquième Sonate pour violon seul d'Ysaye, qu'il a donnée à la Philharmonie de Paris en janvier 2022, que j'ai eu l'idée de composer pour lui ce mouvement lent, suspendu et rhapsodique. Le finale est dédié à la violoniste Sarah Nemtanu, que j'ai rencontrée pour la première fois en septembre 2021 à Radio France, où elle enregistrait mon Divertimento Op.15 avec trois de ses collègues de l'Orchestre National de France. Cette rencontre fulgurante d'une journée, musicale et humaine, a été une vraie lumière en ce jour de septembre, un échange d'une vision de la vie et de la musique, où j'allais vers elle à travers mon écriture, tandis qu'elle allait vers moi avec son interprétation. Symbole pour moi d'amitié et d'estime, ma Sonate pour violon seul a été inspirée tout au long de la composition par ces trois dédicataires bienveillants et éclairants, qui ont guidé mon chemin et ont su apporter une lumière dans ma vie d'artiste interprète et compositrice. / Violon / Billaudot

These sonatas are among the epoch-making works of the Violin repertoire and nowadays figure in the standard repertoire of every violinist. It is all the more surprising therefore that until now there has been no Urtext edition of such significant works. The score is based on a first edition supervised by Corelli himself. From what we know of performance practice in Corelli’s time however more was expected of the violinist than just a musical reading of the printed score: it was customary to add ornamentation verging on improvisation with embellishment and 'variations as desired'. The original score is therefore presented here withthe earliest documented ornamentation from a reprint published by Roger in Amsterdam in 1708. This ornamentation is not meant to be slavishly imitated but to stimulate the player to find their own creative and stylistically confident interpretation of the score. As Roger did not specify any ornaments for the sonatas in the second volume the 'variations as desired' used by Corelli’s pupil Geminiani have been reproduced with the ninth Sonata as an example. Advice on performance is given by the Cologne baroque specialist Reinhard Goebel. This advice does not only apply to ornamentation but also to articulation bowings and more besides calling for specific markings in the separate Violin part. The realisation of the Continuo part echoes the fashions of that time. Here too advice on performance is meant to stimulate free interpretation by the continuo player. A figured Bass part is included for the player who prefers to read the accompaniment from figures.

In seguito, oltre ad avere pubblicato quasi la totalità delle composizioni del Prete Rosso l?Istituto veneziano ha corretto e attualizzato le sue più antiche edizioni alla luce delle nuove conquiste musicologiche e con una precisa attenzione a quelle che erano le istanze che provenivano dagli esecutori ?storicamente informati?. Giuseppe Tartini non ha goduto di altrettanta fortuna. Dopo alcune edizioni assai poco accurate (si potrebbe parlare piuttosto di reinterpretazioni, quali furono tra le altre quelle del leggendario violinista Fritz Kreisler e di Riccardo Zandonai), legate prevalentemente alla sopravvivenza ottocentesca di alcuni brani (in particolare il Trillo del Diavolo, la Didone Abbandonata e le variazioni L?Arte dell?Arco) nel corso del XX secolo poche edizioni davvero attendibili sono state date alle stampe, in primis quelle della collana a cura di Edoardo Farina e Claudio Scimone (Le opere di Giuseppe Tartini, Carisch) ma anche grazie all?azione isolata di violinisti (Giovanni Guglielmo) e musicologi (Enrica Bojan e Agnese Pavanello). Ancora oggi siamo ben lontani dalla possibilità di avere una moderna e completa edizione dell?opere del Maestro delle Nazioni anche se grazie all?instancabile lavoro di Sergio Durante e con l?istituzione del ?Comitato Tartini 2020? si intravedono nuovi slanci e grandi opportunità. La mancanza di edizioni attendibili per gli interpreti si è sovente riverberata sulle esecuzioni - fossero queste inserite in saggi scolastici, concorsi internazionali o recital dei più noti virtuosi - al punto che è stato quasi impossibile liberare le opere tartiniane da tutta una serie di istrionismi e di stilemi ottocenteschi che ormai si erano profondamente radicati alla percezione di queste opere. La presente edizione mira quindi non tanto a fornire una nuova edizione critica (talune, ottime, già esistono) di queste quattro Sonate che sono state scelte per la loro notorietà, rappresentatività e bellezza quanto piuttosto a garantire agli interpreti, siano essi giovani studenti o affermati professionisti, un testo coerente e corretto. Per questo motivo in aggiunta ad una parte di violino priva di segni interpretativi abbiamo ritenuto utile introdurre una seconda parte di violino con diteggiature ed indicazioni dinamiche che potranno essere di giovamento sia per gli interpreti ?tradizionali? che per quelli interessati alle prassi esecutive storiche. Georg Friedrich Handel's Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo belong to the core repertoire of Baroque Violin music some of them even being among the most famous repertoire pieces of their time. The new edition in the Wiener Urtext Edition series is based on Handel's autographs contemporary copies and first prints. In addition to Handel's nine violin sonatas it contains two minuets for Violin and Basso Continuo which have been handed down in the environment of the sonatas. Apart from the solo Violin part and a Continuo score with a realised easily playable Basso Continuo the edition also includes a figured Bass partwhich gives experienced Continuo players the opportunity to improvise on the Basso Continuo part. The notes on interpretation by the renowned Baroque expert Reinhard Goebel provide insight into a sonata performance that was common practice at the time of Handel.

Schumann’s Violin Sonatas were taken up with enthusiasm very soon after they were first performed. The Second Sonata was described at the time as 'Second only to Beethoven's Sonata in A'. Sonatas Op. 105 and Op. 121 are now presented in the first volume of this Wiener Urtext edition. It is based on the score in the new complete Schumann edition which draws not only upon the authorised first editions of both works but also upon Schumann’s working manuscripts and – in the case of the 2nd Sonata – the score used by the engravers and extensive correspondence between the composer and the originalpublishers. Meticulous comparison of these original documents has made it possible to determine numerous details regarding dynamics and articulation. Schumann’s autograph manuscript has been of significant help in this respect. The edition is part of the ABRSM syllabus (grade 8).
