Anders Brødsgaard's Dream Fragment  for solo Violin was composed in 1989. Commissioned by Nordisk Konservatorieråd. Programnote: DREAM FRAGMENT er skrevet i 1989 på bestilling af Nordisk Konservatorieråd og indgik i en workshop på det Jyske Musikkonservatorium hvor de strygerstuderende indstuderede værker skrevet af nordiske komponister. Desværre blevDREAM FRAGMENT erklæret for uspilleligt i første omgang indtil en ung solistklasse-studerende Johannes Søe Hansen fik fingre i det.  DREAM FRAGMENT begynder på de højest mulige flageolet-toner bevæger sig gradvist ned i ’normalt’ violintone-område og forsvinder hen mod slutningen igen op i det højeste flageolet-leje.  ’Hovedtemaet’ i stykket er en brudt akkord - spillet med violinetude-bueføring i Paganini-stil - som optræder både som flageolet-akkord som fortissimo-akkord som pizzicato-akkord som en melodisk bevægelse etc.  Stykket blev det første i en række - mere eller mindre uspillelige - stykker for violin og cello hvor jeg udnytter strygeinstrumenternes naturlige flageoletter - dvs de overtoner der fremkommer når man berører strengen ganske let på nogle bestemte punkter. En teknik der kræver meget stor præcision og teknisk kunnen af den udøvende.  Anders Brødsgaard

Original compositions by Robert Trory with piano accompaniments by Sally Mays.This volume was devised by my husband Robert Trory and replaces his First Book of Concert pieces and his Second Book of Concert Pieces. As well as using material from these books he arranged a further 4 pieces from his VIOLIN PLAYING books 1 and 2 and composed another seven original pieces to complete this collection all with piano parts expertly written by Sally Mays.The graded pieces presented here are intended to provide performance experience for the student. The pieces incorporate different styles and genres and it is hoped thatthey will enhance concerts for both performer and listener.Those arrangements of compositions first published as violin duets in VIOLIN PLAYING books one and two presented here for violin and piano incorporate small differences in the violin parts. Robert Trory's work of assembling this book was interrupted in the spring of 2013 when illness made it impossible for him to proceed. His fight to overcome a brain tumour was sadly lost in August 2013. However he had asked me to oversee the production of 'CONCERT COLLECTION' and this I do on his behalf.The task would have been impossible for me without the very great help and guidance of Mark Goddard of Spartan Press. 'Three Scherzi for violin and piano follow closely the Minuet and Trio form used so often for lighter movements in eighteenth and early nineteenth century sonatas and symphonies. In each piece the Minuet isdivided into two sections and each section is repeated; similarly the Trio section is also divided into two repeated sections in which the music is generally more gently paced. After the Trio the minuet is played againimmediately this time without repeats. In these Scherzi I have chosen to use variants of the original of each section in most instances rather than make exact repetitions. The first Scherzo lasts approximately 3 minutes thesecond 6 minutes and the third 2 minutes. Part of my interest and purpose in writing these pieces was to use an identical but highly elastic form for three pieces of different durations. I was also intrigued by the form’shistorical development and evolution into the Scherzo and I hope this explains the atmosphere and style of the music.The material for each of the three pieces is different although the harmonic and rhythmic worlds ofeach one are similar and as a result they do form a complete work in three movements. However each of the three Scherzi may be played separately. These three pieces were written between September 2004 and August2007.'Brian Elias

Critical Edition Violin Solo Part-This new edition of the violin solo part to the Korngold Violin Concerto in D Major is the first-ever to include Jascha Heifetz's performance notations edited by Endre Granat one of his star proteges. Born in Austria Korngold was forced into US exile by the annexation of Austria by the Nazis. He vowed to give up composing anything other than film music until Hitler was defeated. With the end of World War II he retired from films to concentrate on music for the concert hall. The violin concerto was the first such work that Korngold wrote following some initial persuasion from violinist and fellow émigré Bronislaw Huberman. Korngold was hurt by the assumption that he hadsold his integrity to Hollywood. He was thus determined to prove himself with a work that combined vitality and superb craftsmanship. Korngold composed his Violin Concerto in D major Op.35 in 1945 dedicating it to Alma Mahler the widow of his childhood mentor Gustav Mahler. The work was premiered on February 15 1947 by Jascha Heifetz and the St. Louis Symphony under conductor Vladimir Golschmann. It received the most enthusiastic ovation in St. Louis concert history at the time. On March 30 1947 Heifetz played the concerto in Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Efrem Kurtz: the broadcast performance was recorded on transcription discs. Heifetz's performance launched the work into the standard repertoire and it quickly became Korngold's most popular piece. Concerning Heifetz's performance of the work the composer wrote In spite of the demand for virtuosity in the finale the work with its many melodic and lyric episodes was contemplated more for a Caruso than for a Paganini. It is needless to say how delighted I am to have my concerto performed by Caruso and Paganini in one person: Jascha Heifetz.
