Duo-Sonata for violin and piano was written between September and October of 2010. It is made up of three movements, each of which has unique characteristics. The first, Allegro appassionato, is monothematic, although the theme itself is presented in several ways. Following a vigorous start featuring violin cadenza, the movement is developed with a lively feel, alternating lyrical fragments with other energetic ones. Its conclusion is resounding.

Meanwhile, the second movement, Quasi un lamento, is introspective and fragile. A long melody is sustained by a delicate and transparent piano accompaniment, evoking once again the theme of the first movement and concluding with a Lento of descending piano harmonies while the violin follows, in octaves, with heartfelt glissando.

The third movement, Scherzando-Allegro, is a light-hearted game between the piano and the violin. The main theme is repeated once again, this time with a binary time signature. The violin uses ricochet (the rebounding of notes in a bow stroke), as well as natural and artificial harmonies in quick time. The piano part unfolds completely naturally, excluding any gratuitous artifice.

It is a work for violin and piano inspired directly by Paganini's Capriccio No. 13, known as La risata del diavolo and one of the most renowned capriccios from the series of twenty-four composed by the celebrated Genovese violinist and composer. In my version for violin and piano, I have singled out the two essential features of the work: the third notes on a double string that emulate the devil's laughter, and the quick eighth notes that follow, all of it within a light and humorous chromaticism.

Il diavolo begins with a slow and fragmented but suggestive violin cadenza. It then follows the Allegro deciso, built on the two features mentioned above. In the central part, yet another violin cadenza of a similar character but which recalls the devil's laughter more evidently. The Allegro deciso goes on up to a carefree and virtuosic finale.

The work is dedicated to violinist Jesus Reina.

Duo for Violin and Piano is cast in the form of a single, continuously evolving movement, whose musical ideas move from an urgent, hushed blur of whirring sound to a buoyant and optimistic lyrical theme, stated by the violin over syncopated chordal figures in the piano. The melodic shapes of these episodes are transformed in various moods and tempi throughout the composition.

The Sonatina In E Major For Violin And Piano (Op. 80) was composed in 1915, and first published in 1921. It is written in three movements: Lento - Allegro; Andantino; Lento - Allegretto - Vivace. Although it is one of the composer's later works, it is written in an early style, and recalls his childhood memories.

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was a violinist and composer of the Nationalist school. He remains the leading cultural icon of his native Finland, having become the musical and artistic figurehead of the Finnish independence movement during his lifetime. He is best remembered for his symphonic poem Finlandia, and alsohis seven symphonies.

Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. Just like Bach's 6 suites for cello solo, these 6 arabesques are composed of a number of distinct movements which follow the suite principle. Having been considered as a 'fashionable' and 'cliche' composer of his day, Hahn's compositions are possibly not as well-known as they ought to be. Sonata in C major for Violin and Piano, however, shatter these prejudices held, representing the engaging diversity of the composer's music. Venezuelan-born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) entered the Paris Conservatoire at 10 years old. He received a high standard of musical education from Decombes, Lavignac, Dubois and Massenet, before becoming a prolific and versatile composer himself, writing works for all genres. For Hahn, music was a magical art and his compositions often contain expressions of his otherwise hidden emotions and moods. Sonata in C major contains a variety of different features, making for a pleasant and evocative piece for advanced violinists.

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism.
