Selected from the Gayaneh Ballet, these three colorful examples of Aram Khachaturian's writing for ballet are based on rhythms and melodic motives from different ethnic groups, ranging from the very Slavic Ukranian Gopak (Hopak) to the Armenian Dance of the Maidens and the Kurdish Mountaineers' Dance. They vary in instrumental color and tension from festive and party-like, through sultry and romantic, to tense and almost angry. These may be performed in any combination - a single stand-alone dance movement, a contrasting pair, or all three in a complete set. A culturally rich and unique experience for players and audience alike. Dur: 7:45 (Grade 5).

According to legend, Tolenas Springs, in Solano County, CA was once known as The Land of the Healing Waters due to the restorative powers of the water. This beautiful descriptive work begins with a slow, lyrical melody reminiscent of the flowing water, followed with the music evolving into a faster, heroic theme stated by the brass. Composer John Harbison writes: “Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk's Ruby, My Dear, which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piece reflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk's tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then in the grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.†Dur: 5:30.

The Wishing Well paints a musical portrait of a young child approaching a well and making a wish. The music ebbs and flows, utilizing solo instruments as well as the full ensemble, describing the water at the bottom of the well. Reaching the climax of the piece, the main theme is stated as the child tosses a coin into the well, and we follow its path down to the water. Delicate melodies and warm harmonies capture the essence of the child's wish, and the hope that it will be granted. (Grade 3.5) Dur: 4:30.

Ancient Desert Drone was composed for orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch “drone” throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The Immovable Do) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. This transcription for band is an exotic and welcome addition to the repertoire for winds. Duration: 5:00Recorded by the Trinity University Symphonic Wind Ensemble – James Worman, conductor
