The title 'called dusk' quotes the last line of the prose fragment 'Lessness' by Samuel Beckett: 'Figment dawn dispeller of figments and the other called dusk'. As regards the compositional structure, the three movements of the work written 'in memoriam Gyorgy Ligeti' are based on the tones of a Kaddish which, however, cannot literally be heard but, with the fingertips placed on the cello strings, generate artificial harmonics of totally different sequences of tones.

...called dusk II for string quartet draws its inspiration from a line in Samuel Beckett's short story Lessness: 'Figment dawn dispeller of figments and the other called dusk'.The work is a kind of double Chaconne, each part of which contains 26 chords based on specific permutations of fundamental notes and their harmonics. Each of the parts pass through alternating, harmonically contrasted planes, becoming entwined in the manner of a chimera through their rhythmic structure and dynamics. This intermittently produces a sort of 'inner voice' which runs through all four instruments. The fundamental notes and harmonics separate during the progress of the composition, becoming independent and then disintegrating. The consonant harmony resulting from the amalgamation of the two planes ultimately collapses into a rigid motor-like linearity. Detlev Muller-Siemens.

Sarah Baker is Vocal Composer in Residence at Education Music Services, an ABRSM examiner and a well known composer of songs and musicals for primary schools and massed-choral events. All this experience has come together in the creation of this first published album of piano pieces, inspired by the sounds heard at night from the woodland just beyond Sarah’s childhood home.Suitable for players of around grade 4-5 standard, her evocative sound pieces begin at the tranquillity of dusk and end with the exuberant dawn chorus. The composer writes:'I grew up with woods behind my house, and the nocturnal noises and images that I remember were the inspiration for these eight short sound pictures on the theme of night. The music moves first from the tranquility of dusk and evening mists, to the emerging starlight of twilight. As night falls it takes on on a darker quality with shadows and dreams disturbing peace and calm. The night birds and bats swoop and flit past as they seek their prey, but gradually dawn approaches and peaceful sleep is restored. The morning is heralded in the joyful exuberance of the dawn chorus.'.

On the broadcast of the film From Dusk Till Dawn, the following note could be read in Gong (German radio and television programme guide) on 21 May: The gangsters Seth (George Clooney) and Richard Gecko (Quentin Tarantino) are on the run. On their way to Mexico, they take the apostate preacher Fuller and his children hostage. On their journey, they end up in Titty Twister Bar, not suspecting that it is peopled by vampires. Well, after deducting some film junk, some typical elements remain: what is past and over, constant new dramatic pair constellations, what is dead and constantly reawakening, the transformations, the troubles and destructions, the final annihilation teeming with destruction etc. Basically, it is a myth of ruin, in whose structure the elements are interchangeable. It could also be told with a coherent material concept, in a historically obsolete manner, in an old-fashioned way, with non-compensation, with flaring abolition yes, does everything always work??? It is good that it only takes place in a bar and that the bar invites us into Titty Twister in attractive neon writing. Restless nature and beauty are at home in the bar today. That facilitates for us the effortlessness of having fun in life. And today there is a special programme my piece Titty Twister for Accordion, Viola, Nepalese Singing Bowl, Pinballs and Mini Dramolettes. Its all expression, isnt it??? Nicolaus A.
