Les titres des mouvements de la Petite Suite, notamment ' Cortège ' et ' Ballet ', évoquent aussi bien la Première Suite d'orchestre que l'univers poétique des Fêtes galantes de Paul Verlaine (' Cortège ', ' En bateau ') dont Debussy avait mis en musique plusieurs poèmes dès 1882. L'oeuvre fut cédée à l'éditeur Durand, Schoenewerk and Cie le 8 décembre 1888. Elle parut au début de l'année suivante, le dépôt légal ayant été effectué le 12 février 1889. The six pieces in this little suite were written between 1893 and 1896. They were inspired by Hélène Bardac, the daughter of a singer with whom he was friends. The girl was born in 1892 and called 'Dolly? on account of her small, delicate figure. The pieces, composed mainly for her birthday or the New Year, reflect the world as experienced by the growing child, from a lullaby to a temperamental dance. But it was not meant to be taken too seriously, as shown by the subtle allusions to his own music and that of others. Despite their simple basic structure these pieces, which soon became popular, contain numerous harmonic and rhythmic subtleties typical of the French composer - 'children's music? that is also well suited to adults. / Piano 4 Mains

Two piano rehearsal score Carl Vine’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind – the others being his first two piano sonatas.  Its composer describes it as ‘a conscious and continuous tribute to the Piano Concerto as a medium and historical entity’, a fact most apparent in the slow movement, with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach.  This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form, with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement.  The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet), and also some typically pianistic glitter across the orchestra, with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case. / Piano Music / Répertoire / Piano

Everybody knows it, and for many a player it was perhaps the first tentative attempt to coax sounds out of the piano: Chopsticks. The origin of this popular piano piece, like that of most folksongs, cannot be ultimately settled today. Legend has it that it was written by Ferdinand Loh and that the designation of the work 'F. Loh: Walzer' eventually turned into 'Flohwalzer'.But no matter who actually wrote the waltz: It is, without doubt, one of the most famous piano pieces and known all over the world. In France, it is called 'Côtelettes' [Chops], in Great Britain 'Chopsticks', and in Mexico 'Los Changuitos' (Little Monkeys). Technically speaking, however, it is not even a waltz. It is composed in 2/4 time and, with regard to style, rather is a polka or a galop.Eric Mayr transcribed the 16-bar original into a concert version for piano duet. / Piano 4 Mains

Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands.For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve, a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier, but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs), and this set of three, as published, form a satisfying unit.The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme. Contrasting material follows, making use of a distinctive repeated note figure, then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin's A minor Prelude, with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence, but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy. / Piano 4 Mains

Per Pianoforte A Quattro Mani (O Due Pianoforti). Par CALLIGARIS SERGIO. Sergio Calligaris was born in Rosario (1941), Argentina. He is one of the last musicians to incarnate the traditional 19th century figure of pianist, teacher and composer, inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century by Muzio Clementi and carriedon after that by a sequence of famous names that the history of music has handed down to us. As a pianist, he began to give public performances at the age of 13, making his debut in his home town Rosario. Following this success, he embarked upon an extremely busy career as a soloist, giving numerous recitals in Buenos Aires and other citiesin Argentina. He continued to take advanced lessons with eminent exponents of the most prestigious international piano schools. In 1974 he became an Italian citizen and settled in Rome, teaching piano as principal instrument at the S. Pietro a Majella StateConservatory in Naples, the Luisa DAnnunzio Conservatory in Pescara and the Alfredo Casella Conservatory in Aquila. As a composer, he began - at just 9 years of age - to study in the rigorous school of Paul Hindemith, under the guidance of Father Luis Machado, from whom he inherited a love of counterpoint and a strong taste for harmony. He took a diploma incomposition, counterpoint and fugue at the age of 16 at the Amigos del Arte Society in Rosario, going on in 1964 to do an advanced course in 12-tone counterpoint at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The catalogue of his compositions, which has nowreached Op. 55, encompasses a huge range of instrumental/vocal chamber music and symphonic works: a vast and articulated catalogue, in which Sergio Calligaris’s composition expresses its inspiration through the dramatic development of a dialecticalcontrast between the two natures of the composer’s personality - the elegiac and the dithyrambic - which confront and interact with each other giving rise to artistic outcomes of a deeply moving nature. / Niveau : Intermédiaire à Avancé / Répertoire / Piano 4 Mains

Ma mre l'oye (Mother Goose Suite) is typical of Ravel's style with its modal melodies, use of dance forms and rhythmic precision. For this suite, Ravel selected favorite French fairy tales with references to fantasy, dreams and legends of childhood, and provided simple and delicate settings for piano duet (one piano, four hands). Although featuring childhood themes, Ma mre l'oye is at the late intermediate to early advanced level. This teaching/performance edition contains the suite in its entirety and is based on the first edition published by Durand in 1910. Editors Gayle Kowalchyk and E. L. Lancaster have included expert fingering suggestions and hand redistributions for technical ease, and have suggested ways to perform grace notes and glissandi in footnotes. The primo and secondo parts are on separate pages with measure numbers in both parts for easy reference. Late intermediate to early advanced.

Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra. Par GERSHWIN GEORGE. Gershwin's Concerto was premiered on December 3, 1925, in Carnegie Hall - the epicentre of New York's classical music scene. It belongs to a group of self-imposed experiments” with which the composter sought to make inroads into serious” music: I have only written three 'opuses' so far - 'The Blue Monday Opera,' 'The Rhapsody in Blue' and the 'Concerto.' I have devoted much time to these works, but they are, of course, not my regular work. They are experiments - laboratory work in American music.” For his edition, Norbert Gertsch reviewed a multitude of autograph and printed sources in the USA and for the first time presents an Urtext edition of this very popular pianoconcerto suffused by the jazz idiom.
