Oliver had a great feel for the funky jazz style which was so popular. This chart features tenor sax throughout, and was recorded on the Fantabulous album. It is a very easy chart to play, and it would be a great addition to any big band book. This also could be played by a smaller instrumentation as recorded by Oliver (4 saxes, 2 tpts.2 trbs. 3 rhythm). 5-4-4-3.

Bob Curnow has a way of picking out the Metheny tunes that work so well in a big band setting. This chart is based on a bright, happy tune of Pat's. The medium tempo and contemporary feel make this a very delightful chart. There is solo space for alto sax (or guitar, or whomever you wish) 5-4-4-4.

Bob has created an absolutely thrilling 12 minute work, inspired by his Celtic roots (Towednack is a small area in Cornwall, England). The Celtic influence is heard in the triple-meter settings and the interlude which reflects back on a Riverdance style of music. Tenor sax is featured. Very much in the genre of his Metheny/Mays charts of the past. Commissioned by Riverside Community College (CA) Performed at the August, 1999 Kenton Sounds concert in Los Angeles. No w.w. doubles. The CD on which this piece is recorded is Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes and aux. perc.).

This may be the all-time greatest jazz arrangement of a standard tune. Recorded on the Contemporary Concepts LP, this great standard is turned into a marvelous vehicle for solo statements from alto, tenor, 2 different trumpets and baritone saxophone. No big band jazz library can be complete without this superb arrangement. (This music is available from Mosaic Records in their Russo/Holman CD set.) 5-5-5-4.

Anyone familiar with Benny Carter's music knows what to expect ....... the highest quality, lovely melodies or swinging tunes that lift you out of your seat. This piece is a part of the CD The Legend, as recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra. It is a bright, swinging, happy chart with solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano and bass. It makes a great opener. This is the way to wake up your band and your audiences. 5-4-4-4.

Nelson wrote an album for Johnny Hodges (Black, Brown and Beautiful, RCA) featuring the compositions of Duke Ellington and also some of his original things. This Ellington tune just romps and stomps right from the start. The ensemble shouts just scream with wonderful voicings that lift you up out of your seat! There is solo space for Alto Sax (of course), Trumpet and Piano. Ellington's melody and Nelson's arrangement ...... an absolute winning combination! Your band will love this one! 5-4-4-4.

This is a gorgeous feature for tenor saxophone (there is also a piano solo). Sensuous, warm, lush ..... all those good things. Set in a slow bossa-nova style, this lyrical piece will please your players and audiences alike. Very modest brass ranges (high D for tpt. 1) and easy rhythms make this chart very playable and attractive for just about any band. 5-4-4-4 (Opt. 10 brass).

Recorded on the A View From the Side CD by the Bill Holman Band, this chart is a slow blues, with Willis taking a VERY different approach. There are doubles in all the saxophone parts, group improvisation, solo for trumpet, piano and tenor saxophone. Lots of double-time swing feel which is so refreshing. 5-4-4-4.

Many have tried, but few have been able to match the incredible swing that happens when you combine Billy Byers' arranging with the Count Basie Orchestra. Originally recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Hey, Jealous Lover is a medium-swing chart that will excite your band and audiences alike! Filled with typical Basie-esque piano solo fills (written out), there is also room for trumpet and tenor saxophone improvisation. The ensemble writing is powerful and swinging; nothing complex or rhythmically awkward, just a great melody with hard swingin' horn lines and tasty solo spots. 5-4-4-4.

Stan Kenton had a certain touch in his arranging that stood out. He took a simple, slow-swinging approach to this great Neal Hefti tune, and it was one of the most popular charts played by the band in the 1970's. Piano takes the melody, while the trombones set the harmonic and rhythmic groove. This is a wonderful piece to program, becasue it is so different than most charts. 5-5-5-3.
