Pat Metheny is one of the most critically acclaimed commercially successful and musically significant artists of the last 50 years. Le mystère entretenu sur la vie de Nicolas Obouhow a renforcé le mythe autour du personnage et autour de cette manière de Grand Oeuvre qu'il n'a cessé de projeter : son Livre de Vie. Il appartient à l'un des courants qualifiés de futuristes au XXe siècle, mais sa singularité exceptionnelle le relie aux figures brûlantes de l'histoire de la musique. Ayant conçu, depuis le début du XXe siècle, un système d'écriture qui préfigure certaines des conduites compositionnelles les plus novatrices (Schoenberg, Messiaen) il s'autorise, au piano aussi bien qu'à l'orchestre, des textures véritablement inouïes. Mettant en scène un instrument de son invention - la Croix sonore - des voix criées, sifflées, un pianodouble , le compositeur vise un spectacle total avec des costumes, des couleurs projetées, dans un espace qu'il avait conçu lui-même.

Le ?Bach tchèque?. C?est ainsi que le compositeur Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745) a été longtemps qualifié non seulement par ses contemporains mais aussi par la postérité. Fils d'un organiste de Lounovice, il fut instruit dans un collège de Jésuites à Prague. Il obtint un poste de contrebassiste à la cour du roi de Saxe, à Dresde, en 1710. Entre 1716 et 1719, il fit un voyage à Vienne (où il étudia auprès de Johann Joseph Fux), puis en Italie où, selon toute vraisemblance, il put connaître Antonio Lotti et Alessandro Scarlatti. En un temps où la musique gagnait ses lettres de noblesse en Allemagne, ce contrebassiste tchèque partagea souvent sa vie entre Prague et Dresde, au service de la Chapelle Royale où il demeura jusqu'à la fin de ses jours. Son oeuvre, riche de quelque 200 opus, comprend de superbes pages pour instruments à vent mais aussi pour l?église, privilégiant la voix et les offices religieux. / Livre /
