Fantasia transcribed for violoncello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus-Born in Erfurt the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827 1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini. Both appear here in their original version for Violin and Piano and for the first time in a transcription for Cello and Piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus.The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics andpizzicato.It (BA 10693) can be mastered by young Cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position.The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves. Brahms completed his Cello Sonata Op.99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the Cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the Piano. Even though the work was generally received positively it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the Cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists Becker and Klengel had aconnection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. Composed in 1948 the Cello Sonata or Sonata for Cello and Piano by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was dedicated to Pierre Fournier the French cellist. Its four movements mainly ternary are as listed below: - Allegro (Tempo di Marcia) - Cavatine - Ballabile - Finale Pierre Fournier partly helped Francis Poulenc to compose the Cello part as this latter was not a specialist of this instrument. Francis Poulenc is French composer and pianist. He also produced Piano and Chamber pieces Operas ('Dialogues des Carmélites') ballets ('Les Biches') as well as some orchestralworks.

Composed by the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinü in 1930  Suite Miniature is a chamber work for Cello and Piano that lasts 10 minutes and 30 seconds. The difficulty for Cello is considered as medium and for the Piano easy to medium. Suite Miniature is divided in seven sections: I. Moderato II. Poco andante III. Poco moderato IV. Andante V. Poco allegro VI. Allegretto VII. Moderato Good for recitals this piece is really melodic and cheerful with some parts quiet and others quite energetic. BohuslavMartinü(1890-1959) also wrote 13 other ballets 15 operas and 6 symphonies and some orchestral and chamber music.

Russian army officer Cesar Cui is best known for his avocational life in music – as a composer and music critic. Even though Cui composed in almost all genres of his time his status today in therepertoire is considerably small based (in the West) primarily on some of his Piano and chamber music – such as the (originally) Violin and Piano piece Orientale. Part of Kaleidoscope a collectionof 24 miniatures (most of which are now forgotten) Orientale has been a staple on violinists' and cellists' encore lists for more than a century now. The piece is a prime example of Cui’s strongesttalent the crystallization of mood at an instant in his instrumental miniatures. The 6/8 time Allegretto rides along on a tambourine rhythm set up by the soloist in the opening bars with the main tune offered by the Piano andlater taken up “with tenderness” by the Cello. As the name suggests this beautiful miniature carries oriental sounds and motives symbolising the mysterious atmosphere of the desert and with a performance time of under2 minutes is a perfect addition to any cellist’s repertoire.

Since its premiere in 1873 this work has held an important place in the Violoncello repertoire. It is on the one hand a short charming composition; on the other hand equally important is its use in instruction during the first few years of playing. This Concerto en Ut mineur for cello and piano was first published in 1947 by Editions Salabert being attributed to Johann Christian Bach with harmonization by Henri Casadesus. Certain musicological studies after its publication proved that the Concerto should not have been attributed to Johann Christian Bach after all as it had actually been composed “in the style of Bach” some two centuries later. Nevertheless the Concerto has been a success and is today often performed and studied closely.
