Couperin's Concert Pieces for Cello and String Quartet accompaniment is an exciting addition to the string repertoire for its slightly unusual instrumentation. Francois Couperin (1668-1733) is often nicknamed 'Couperin the Great' to distinguish him from other members of the musical family. Concert Piecesis made up of five movements; 1) Prelude, 2) Sicilienne, 3) The Trumpet, 4) The Complaint, and 5) Devil's Air. Couperin's moods are expressed through choices of keys, adventurous harmonies and discords. With a significant amount of variation and inspiration, Concert Pieces is essential to the repertoire of aspiring, advanced String Quartets and solo cellists..

Each of these five movements for solo cello uses a different technique to extend the performer's control over various dimensions of the music. The composer writes:
There are five pieces. In the first, second and fifth there are phrase sequences with free pauses between them. There are also notations for just dynamics (sounds free), and for just rhythms (free sounds). The third and fourth pieces are on grids of 6 x 6 and 8 x 8 bars, allowing continuities to be chosen in variously free ways.
The fifth piece, consisting of a series of passages that may be performed in any sequence, may also be played as a cello duo, with the second cellist playing a different sequence.
The Anton of the title is the dedicatee, cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, who gave the world premiere of this suite at St James' Church, Islington, London on September 21, 2018. This performing edition is a facsimile of the composer's autograph manuscript. At moderate tempi, the total duration of the work may be approximately 15 minutes.

“Gordon Wright was the friend of a lifetime. For thirty years Gordon and I shared our two greatest passions: music and Alaska. Gordon was my musical collaborator, my next-door neighbor, my fellow environmentalist and my camping buddy. These miniatures are musical sketches of three moments and places in our friendship. Like Alaska, Gordon was larger than life. He always lived his own way. And he died just as he would have wanted. We found him lying on the deck of his cabin in the Chugach Mountains, curled up against his favorite birch tree, looking across the waters of Turnagain Arm toward the Resurrection Valley and the tiny settlement of Hope.” - John Luther AdamsThis music contains no normal stopped tones. All the sounds are produced as natural harmonics or on open strings. There are no harmonics higher than the sixth. So these sounds should be clear and resonant. Even so, balancing the harmonics with the open strings requires careful attention. The durations of the individual pieces are given at the end of each. The total duration of the set is about ten minutes.

“Now II†is the second part of a triptych of chamber pieces entitled “Profiles of Lightâ€. The first part is written for solo piano (Now I, BA 11073), the second for unaccompanied cello. The two instruments are then combined in the concluding third part, Uriel (BA 11013).All three pieces were inspired by the Abstract Expressionist paintings of the American artist Barnett Newman. Newman's work has had a formative impact on Matthias Pintscher's artistic philosophy: what does it mean to reduce things to essentials while seeking maximum immediacy of expression? Several of Newman's paintings have a radiant light of uncommon intensity, yet resembling a dark illumination. The same sort of thing is found in the late works of Franz Schubert, where a comparable profundity and retrospective yearning likewise shine through the surface of even the brightest tonalities. This is a piece about resonances, about the inward and outward givens of existence, about life itself: 'I find the cello a highly suitable instrument for depicting such existential conditions'.
