Suitable for Grades 6-8.Schuman won the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1943 for A Free Song. It contains granite-like blocks of dissonant harmony and sharp-edged counterpoint and is modelled on Beethoven’s Fifth. Written during World War II it combines lines from 'Long Too Long America' and 'Song of the Banner at Daybreak ' poems which have elements of the same patrioticfervor.

Balancing The Books was commissioned by the swingle singers for the Bach 250th anniversary celebrations. The work uses material from the C sharp Major Preludes from Bach's two books of the 48 Preludes and Fugues. This forms part of a series of new works by leading European composers. Charles-Marie Widor is best known for the Toccatta the finale from his Fifth Symphony for Organ but the real heart of his compositional oeuvre lies in the ten Organ symphonies and there is much to be discovered in the rest of his compositional output. This Mass was originally written in 1878 for a choir of Baritones the Chorus of the seminary next door to St Sulpice in Paris the church where he was temporary Organist for sixty-four years and mixed Chorus and two Organs. Although Widor lived in Paris during the years of the radicalism of the decades following World War I he retained a conservatism in composition and musicianship that is evident in this powerfulMass.The entire work has been transposed one half step lower ‘to avoid the awkward key of F sharp major’.

A lightly syncopated main theme infused with mixed meter and sharp articulations drives the piece forward with confidence. The Latin phrase Hodie means on this day and this ancient cry is a call to worship for the church.
