The Black Knight (Op.25) is a secular cantata for chorus and orchestra composed in 1893. It takes its text from a poem from H. W. Longfellow which is itself a translation of a poem in German by Ludwig Uhland. The choral parts act as a backing to the orchestra showing how Elgar was developing his orchestration techniques and talents although this development went unnoticed until the sudden success of the Enigma Variations in 1899. Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England’s best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer coming from outside the musical and social establishment which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.

The American premiere in October of 1998 was performed separately as a concert work withthe University of Miami chorus and orchestra conducted by Thom Sleeper and it was subsequently recorded for Albany Records.

The specificity of music heard only in certain seasons is for me an important and thrilling element of the choral tradition: a Beethoven Symphony is welcome at any point in the year but an anthem for Candlemas works only then at a certain time of day and on a certain day of the year. With this functional spirit at the heart of the compositional process I hope that the music collected here makes equal sense in a concert setting. Par BENJAMIN GEORGE. A beguiling 20-minute work for countertenor, women's voices and orchestra, Dream of the Song, George Benjamin's first work since his ground-breaking opera Written on Skin, was premiered in 2015 by the countertenor Bejun Mehta, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by the composer. Employing a reduced orchestra (two oboes, four horns, two percussionists and two harps and strings), the work sets verse by three major poets who spent formative years in Granada- two Hebrew poets of mid-11th century, Samuel HaNagid and Solomon Ibn Gabirol (sung by solo countertenor in English versions by Peter Cole), and Gabriel Garcia Lorca (sung by the female chorus in the original Spanish). This inspired pairing of texts creates a rich, melancholy and strange poetic conjunction, expressed most beautifully in the final movement which, overlaying soloist and choir, offers two simultaneous visions of dawn, conceived a millennium apart./ Répertoire / Choeur

It has been set here for TTBB male voice chorus with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsalpurposes.Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer conductor and educator. He channelled his energetic and creative personality into many musical projects championing the works of Jean Sibelius founding the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and composing many splendid classical pieces. Viewed by his contemporaries as out-of-date his music is now being appreciated as one of the last great contributions from theEnglish Romantic movement.

Op. 147 - Harmony Parts-Diabelliâ??s church music has unjustly largely fallen into oblivion. In his 'Pastoral Mass in F' the Austrian composer of the Biedermeier period succeeded in achieving a balance between artistic aspirations and a form suitable for practical performance. With a duration of about 30 minutes the work is of easy to medium difficulty and is therefore extremely suitable for amateur choirs with orchestra. The 'Pastoral Mass' is suitable for performance both at Christmas time and beyond.
