Of Noblest Cities is intended for a choir of between 12 and about 40 voices although it may also be given by just six singers one to a part (SSATBB). The piece can be performed unaccompanied if no suitable organ is available simply by leaving approximately two crotchet beats of silence between the end of the last note of one verse and the beginning of the next.Underlying the melody is a simple rhythm which is sometimes expanded or contracted. In the first verse the position of the main beats in this rhythm is made clear by the barlines. In the remaining verses however the barlines are only there to help the singers to keep together and forconvenience in rehearsal: singers should observe their own strong beats which fall in different places for each part and not regard the barlines as indicating downbeats. A few of the strong beats which underlie individual parts and appear to be contradicted by the barlines are marked by the symbol / .The words are a beautiful Victorian translation of a Latin hymn by Prudentius which meditates on the story of the three wise men. Each verse is set to the same melody in an increasingly rich counterpoint inspired by the wonderful sound of Tudor choral polyphony. An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Jeremy Thurlow is a composer writer and pianist. His music has been described as ‘seductive innovative full of freshness’ by Henri Dutilleux. This beautiful ballad expresses God's love for His chosen. We did not choose God He chose us – whether for service as ministers or missionaries or simply to be His loving children. Our destiny was laid out before the dawnof time. “I Have Chosen You” paints a glorious picture of God's creation and orchestration of our lives and of His continuing guidance with a gentle hand. Written for the 40th anniversary of Pastor Buckner Fanning'sministry at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio this anthem may be used to honor any and all of God's chosen ones as they begin or end their time in His service. Text based on John 15:16.

When the BBC commissioned this work for the Last Night of the Proms 2018 I was ...(+)
When the BBC commissioned this work for the Last Night of the Proms 2018 I was given quite a detailed brief. First the work should be for the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus (with the BBC Symphony Orchestra) and the two choirs should be quite independent of each other. Secondly the words should acknowledge the centenary of the end of World War I but look optimistically to the future. For the centenary I chose In the Underworld by World War I poet Isaac Rosenberg written in 1914. Originally about unrequited love it can read if you do not know its context as a prophetic look at the next four years with the sense that the women left at home cannot begin tocomprehend the horrors their men face in the trenches. The BBC Singers represent Rosenberg and their music is based on a beautiful Ashkenazi-Jewish prayer mode â?? also known as the â??Ukrainian Gypsyâ?? mode. While I was reading The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran (written in 1923) I came across these lines which seem to answer and assuage the fears expressed in Rosenbergâ??s poem. The BBC Symphony Chorus take on the role of Gibran singing in a beautiful melismatic Maronite Syriac chant into which faith Gibran was born in Lebanon. Later in his life he became very interested in Islam particularly Sufism; therefore the whole piece is in the form of a Sufi Zikr with Sufi devotional rhythms in the percussion starting quiet and low but slowly becoming higher faster and louder. The two choirs start separately but merge into a â??conversation â?? sometimes overlapping and ending on a positive note: Rosenbergâ??s Creature of light and happiness over Gibranâ??s We shall build a tower in the sky. Quite by accident all three Abrahamic faiths are represented in this piece â?? but as Kahlil Gibran famously said: â??You are my brother and I love you. I love you when you prostrate yourself in your mosque and kneel in your church and pray in your synagogue. You and I are sons of one faith â?? the Spirit.'

A Christmas Carol (Hungarian folksong)-The piece was written originally for equal voice choir in 1929. A mixed-choir adaptation was made in 1961 at the request of Oxford University Press. This appeared in print in the same year with an English text under the title A Christmas Carol in a collection of Christmas songs as well as in a separate print. The musical material of the mixed-choir version largely follows the original. There is one essential difference in verse 5 beginning at bar 35 (Babe all holy) where the tenor solo appears with a delightful eight-bar countermelody not found in the original. Since this version only appeared in Kodály's lifetime with an English text this has been retained but we havealso provided the original Hungarian text upon which the equal voice version is based. Zoltán Kodály's complete choral works for mixed voices were published in a new extended edition in 2018 (Z. 6725 and Z. 6725A). This volume containing 51 compositions has been edited by the renowned conductor Péter Erdei one of the most devoted interpreters of Kodály's choral works. The new edition takes into consideration the manuscript sources for the compositions housed in the Kodály Archives in Budapest. The publication features new easily-legible music scores edited on uniform principles. For better readability the new edition is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions. The present publication is an offprint from the renewed edition of Kodály's complete choral works for mixed voices. It has the same format as the volume and has been printed on excellent-quality pale-yellow paper.

The sentiment of welcome that poet Lazarus - herself an immigrant - conveys is sensitive and atthe same time powerful and David has skilfully captured this emotion. Beginning in a sombre chant-like unison it opens to harmony at the most famous line 'I lift my lamp beside the Golden Door' repeating this line in acrescendo to the end. It was performed at the 2013 Inauguration Prayer Service at St. John's Church in Washington D.C.

Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to 'Light ' assembled from various sacred Latin texts. I composed Lux Aeterna in response to my mother's final illness and found great personalcomfort and solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light a universal symbol of illumination at all levels - spiritual artistic and intellectual. The work opens and closes with the beginning andending of the Requiem Mass with the central three movements drawn respectively from the Te Deum O Nata Lux and Veni Sancte Spiritus. The opening Introitus introduces several themes that recur later in thework and includes an extended canon on “et lux perpetua.” In Te Domine Speravi contains among other musical elements the cantus firmus “Herzliebster Jesu” (from the Nuremburg Songbook 1677) and a lengthy inverted canon on “fiat misericordia.” O Nata Lux and Veni Sancte Spiritus are paired songs the former an a cappella motet at the center of the work and the latter a spirited jubilant canticle. A quiet setting of the Agnus Dei precedes the final Lux Aeterna which reprises the opening section of the Introitus and concludes with a joyful celebratory Alleluia.--MortenLauridsen

Winter Cantata / Vinterkantate (1976) by Per Nørgård for a variable ensemble of soloist mixed choir and instruments (minimum: vocalist and organ). Programme Note: When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973) I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: ?The Year? and ?Choral Hymn?. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the 3rd Symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals which inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on thesemelodies: ?Frost Psalm? ?Winter Cantata? ? Winter Hymn? ?Cantica? and others. One of these ´Sarvig melodies´ is now included in the new Danish Hymnbook under the title ?Året?(The Year). Ole Sarvig´s poem ?Året? (The Year) is Danish perhaps Scandinavian in character but its symbolic atmosphere is global (now snow is covering the whole earth). The basic composition of this cantata based on Sarvig´s many verses was done by letting soloist choir and instruments change in feelings and moods: from the almost silent inward-looking beginning (I: Chorale dolorosa) to a dancelike and happy optimism (II: A heaven germ on winged foot thrust deep into the earth its root) followed by nightmarish tone rows as the ?year-wheel of fortune? is turning (III: Sacrifice The Year) and the temptations of the snake (IV: In Paradiso) to the allegorical fights between egoism and altruism (V:The Cycle Autumn. Purgatory) before the ?waiting for a disaster?- atmosphere at the end of this choral Odyssé. Winter Cantata was from the beginning (1976) designed as an open work to be arranged by different combinations of soloists choir and (different) instruments. The printed version by Per Nørgård and Ivan hansen for soloist mixed choir and instruments (obo violin trombone vibraphone/percussion and organ) is from 1990. The work

As a singing teacher choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning over a musicaltapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work says the composer is 'the human reflection on the uncertain on death on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility excitement fear and atonement. The chant ends without ending there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'

This setting of the opening to Psalm 102 was composed in the early 1680s. Purcell who was in his early twenties had succeeded John Blow as organist of Westminster Abbey around the beginning of the decade and his star was in the ascendant as a court composer. In this piece he pulls off a remarkable compositional coup: a single gradual climax lasting over two minutes and culminating on the final repetition of the word 'come' is achieved through a sublime freely developing eight-part weave of the opening material. The harmonies that result from the chromatic inflections on the word 'crying' all serve the mounting tension in this extraordinary miniature.Studyof the autograph manuscript suggest that this anthem was intended to be the opening part of a larger work which was never completed.

Slipknot, the instantly-recognisable heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa, shot to fame after the release of their first album in 1999, grabbing the attention of millions of adoring fans, and some not-so-adoring conservative commentators. From the first, Paul Harries photographed them on stage, backstage and through artistic eyes, and Dysfunctional Family Portraits is a fascinatingly creative look at this distinctive band. The name Dysfunctional Family Portraits perfectly sums up the band, a dysfunctional melee of chaos and aggressive music, while the humans behind the monstrous masks remained truly close, and their camaraderie comes across in these intimate photographic portraits. The energy and chaos of their live shows is particularly well-captured by Harries' brilliant shots, showing them in their natural habitat: that of loud, sweaty, energetic and adrenaline-fuelled music.Throughout Dysfunctional Family Portraits, Paul Harries guides the reader on a journey from Slipknot's beginnings with their truly terrifying masks and red boiler suits, through their changing looks and their artistic developments. As Paul Harries says, being a rock photographer is not an easy task. You have to be able to capture personality and the essence of a musical style in a visual medium. But photographing Slipknot is a whole new endeavour, capturing masked madmen straight out of a horror film while maintaining order among the chaos must have been difficult, but the brilliance of this book is testament to his ability as a photographer.Featuring full colour photographs of Slipknot throughout their journey as a band, you will get to see exclusive backstage antics, dynamic shots of their legendary live shows, as well as hundreds of other behind-the-scenes pictures and words from Harries and members of the band. Perfect for a Slipknot fan, but also ideal for anyone interested in modern heavy metal music or even darkly comic theatrics. A ridiculously entertaining band, the vibrant photographs in Dysfunctional Family Portraits are full of life and full of the energy that Slipknot, as a band, have transmitted through their music. / Livre
