Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50). The two Magnificat settings (C major, ZWV 107; D major, ZWV 108) are amongst well over 30 psalm and Magnificat settings by Zelenka for Vespers services in Dresden. In contrast to the work in C major, where a soprano solo dominates over long passages, the choir has a more prominent part in this Magnificat in D major. Zelenka also heightened the festive character of the work by later adding parts for 2 trumpets and timpani. Authentic performances of the work are therefore possible with and without trumpets. Edited by Frieder Rempp. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas; use during church year: Christmas; Hymns by Martin Luther: Christum wir sollen loben schon; Stuttgart Editions (Urtext): Stuttgart Bach Edition - Bach vocal. Hymns by Martin Luther: Christum wir sollen loben schon; Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Christmas. Study score. Composed 1724. BWV 121. 32 pages. Duration 21 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.121/07. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3112107). ISBN 9790007241544. Language: German/English. This six-movement chorale cantata was first performed on 26 December 1724. The text is based on the Lutheran translation of the early Christian hymn A solis ortus cardinem. The outer movements frame two arias for tenor and bass, and two secco recitatives for alto and soprano. The first and sixth movements are in old-fashioned style, with four-part vocal writing and colla parte instruments. In the aria (movement 2) the tenor is accompanied by an obbligato oboe d'amore, and in the 4th and most striking movement, the three string parts accompany the bass. The demands on the singers, instrumentalists, and chorus are typical of a Bach cantata. Soli SATB, SATB Choir, Obda, Ctto, 3 Trb, 2 Vl, Va, Bc SKU: CA.3112105 Cantata for the 2nd day of Christmas. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach and Martin Luther. Edited by Frieder Rempp. Hymns by Martin Luther: Christum wir sollen loben schon; Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Christmas. Choral Score. Composed 1724. BWV 121. 8 pages. Duration 21 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.121/05. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3112105). ISBN 9790007186302. With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.7005300. $23.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

Soli SATB, Coro SATB, 2 Ob, 2 Blfl f1, 2 Vl, Va, Bc - Level 3 SKU: CA.3912249 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Edited by Klaus Hofmann. Arranged by Klaus Hofmann. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Telemann-Archiv. Organ. Sacred vocal music, Magnificats, Advent, Christmas, Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Hymns in praise of the Virgin Mary, Daily hours. Single Part, Organ. TVWV 9:18. 24 pages. Duration 20 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 39.122/49. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3912249). ISBN 9790007245092. Key: G major. Language: German/English. As one of the three canticles from the New Testament, the Magnificat - the Canticle of Mary - has at all times held a prominent position in church music. Telemann's setting of Luther's German translation of the text bears eloquent witness both to the composer's rich imagination and to his ability to mold a variety of musical shapes into a coherent formal Baroque architecture. Four solo movements with colorfully contrasting instrumentation are juxtaposed with four emphatically homogeneous choral movements; all of the latter are in 6/8 meter and in motet setting with instruments doubling colla parte. Particularly the choral movements are characterized by lively text portrayal and a wealth of at times dramatic imagery. A work of exceptional magnetism for both listeners and choir singers!
