In the Gospel of John, there are a number of times when Jesus uses the statement “I Am,†which his followers would have automatically linked to the divine Name. Some of these statements—Christ as the Bread of Life, the Gateway, the Light of the World—are referenced in Quinn’s text, as well as the Alpha and Omega, which is found three times in Revelation. A few of these statements also appear in the refrain. The verses may be sung by a cantor or the choir. There are a number of musically effective ways to use this piece in liturgy: with the full choir, as written, simply, with cantor and assembly, or with a two-part refrain, using only the soprano and tenor lines.

The cantata Es ist euch gut, dass ich hingehe [It is well that I go forth] BWV 108 for Cantate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. The text contains two sayings by Jesus which are taken directly from the Sunday gospel reading (John 16:5-15). The quotation opening the cantata was set by Bach as a bass aria with solo oboe d'amore; it breathes tranquility and assurance. The second quotation, however, is set as an extended choral fugue in three sections; it forms the center of the cantata. The free text surrounding the biblical quotations is divided into two arias in which the emphasis is on melodic lines; there is only one single recitative, the original text of which was substantially abridged by Bach. A four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3110800.

David von Kampen masterfully crafts the text of Revelation 21:4 - 5 into an inspiring and striking piece for SATB and piano. A variety of compositional techniques—including declamatory writing, polytextuality, and a skillful use of key—connect the biblical text and song powerfully. Smaller choirs can easily adapt this piece for two-part voicing by singing just soprano and tenor in the middle section. Use this piece for Easter Vigil, during the rest of the Easter Season, on All Saints' Day, and for funerals.
Revelation 21:4 - 5 (ESV)
He will wipe away ev'ry tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
And He who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

With the Petrarch settings, I am continuing my preoccupation with classical Italian literature, after setting Michelangelo in 2011 and Ariosto in 2013. The gesture and harmony of the piece are developed entirely from the text and from the sensations that are expressed there. Petrarch's poetry is an exploration of beauty and pain that begins again and again: beauty that lies in pain and pain that is causedby beauty. Anno Schreier.
