Burrows's setting of words of assurance from the English mystic Julian of Norwich (1342-1416) is as relevant today as ever. For the advanced mixed ensemble, the powerful lyrics coupled with gorgeous harmonies make this an optimistic song of hope appropriate throughout the year. All shall be well, And all shall be well, And all manner of thing shall be well. These words of assurance from the English mystic Julian of Norwich (1342-1416) are as relevant today as ever. During her life, Julian saw her community devastated by the Great Plague as well as deep civil unrest. Yet through all the turmoil came a vision of hope that has given the world this profound text. One of the most striking features is how this short text incorporates so much repetition. It's as if the writer knew she must be gently persistent in order for her optimistic message to truly sink in. The opening section tries to capture musically some of that persistent optimism. Then there is a departure from this optimistic tone (measure 26) The feel becomes more desperate, building to an anguished cry (measure 38), acknowledging the reality that, while all shall be well, things are very much NOT well right now. Eventually the anguish subsides (measure 52) as the music turns back hopeward with the calm assurance, again and again, that all shall be well. All shall be well,And all shall be well,And all manner of thing shall be well. These words of assurance from the English mystic Julian of Norwich (1342-1416) are as relevant today as ever. The extremely compositional versatility of Enjott Schneider is evident even in the small(est) form of choral music. In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), the award-winning composer combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. Imbued with calmness and sensuality, the church music composition is based on the text of a Latin antiphon from the Maundy Thursday liturgy. According to the composer, these anonymous verses represent for him the central statement of Christian faith: Ubi Caritas - Where there is love, there is God!In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), Enjott Schneider combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. This contemplative and serene piece was commissioned as a retirement gift for Canadian organist and choir director, Paul Merrit, andfirst performed in 2016. The setting of the well-known biblical words (Matthew 5:9) makes use of a simple repeating melody which gradually builds in intensity through the work. The end returns to the opening calmness, deeply effective in its simplicity. Todd's rich harmonies prevail, underpinned by a supportive piano accompaniment, which also adds colour to the texture.

Fragile and precious, this sacred tone poem is a prayer for peace and a plea for healing of the heart. The soundscape of the anthem rises from a single tone, opening to reveal glimmering splashes of choral color. As the words become more impassioned, the octavo surrenders to a flowing piano episode that matches its intensity. This petition for calm begins to quiet as the anthem winds down, allowing the prayer to end in hushed chords of assurance. Score and Parts (vn, vc) available as a digital download.

Here's a choral fantasy on the traditional African American spiritual, “Soon I Will Be Done.†The grave Wagnerian opening sets the stage for the fiery main theme of the piece–a triplet feeling motif in the lower piano that continues under each chorus statement of the melody. The choir re-enters in the role of the “orchestra†in the second chorus with a haunting legato counter melody that leads up to the first verse. Each verse should have a Gospel/Stride feel with the choir, particularly the upper voices, switching to a more Gospel sound and rhythmic feel. The A sections should be performed with aggression and angst to contrast the calm legato middle section. That middle section is our musical prayer of hope that, like the sentiment of this Spiritual, will continue to live in our hearts despite the sometimes difficult realities of life.

Magnificat is a tribute to the unaccompanied motets of favourite composers from several eras - in particular those of Dufay, the Eton Choirbook, Robert Carver, Lassus and Bach. The work is therefore full of contrast in texture, harmony, mood and pacing, and exploits the resources of unaccompanied chorus in a manner not only analogous to those already mentioned but also to ensemble or orchestral writing. Naturally - given the sentiments of the text - the mood is predominantly joyful and exuberant; but the darker implications of certain phrases in the text are not ignored. Towards the end there is a big choral explosion on one of the traditional plainsong chants for the Magnificat, before the work subsides into a coda of calm serenity. Magnificat was commissioned by the ORA choir. It is dedicated to the French composer Betsy Jolas, in celebration of her 90th birthday, and in equal celebration of our mutual love of many choral composers mentioned above.

A short choral nocturne for SATB and organ, Pan ddaw ust y nos is a setting of a poem by Nesta Wyn Jones. Welsh speakers will respond to the subtle imagery and verbal nuance of the poet's wordplay, as well as to the intense lyric moment of charged reminiscence captured both in her evocation of bygone summer evenings and in Rhian Samuel's simple, evocative music. Pan ddaw ust y nos was written for the London Welsh Chorale, conductor Kenneth Bowen, was premiered at St David's Cathedral, West Wales, on 24 September 2005. An English translation by the composer is also included.
