What has made this Mass rise to the top in popularity in parishes across the English-speaking world? Its adaptability. From parishes with keyboard and/or guitar and cantor to cathedrals with a large SATB choir and multiple instruments (organ, brass quartet, timpani, handbells), Mass of Wisdom has proven itself as a “Mass for the masses.†Its step-wise melodic patterns make it easy to learn without sounding musically trite in any way. Music directors agree that the through-composed Gloria is one of the most finely crafted of all the new musical settings of the prayer. That fine crafting extends to all components of this Mass, especially the acclamations sung during the Eucharistic Prayer. The multi-layered Hosannas in the Sanctus will delight the members of the choir as well as the singing assembly. This is a Mass setting that simply soars. It is a perfect setting for Ordinary Time, but music directors tell us that the Christmas and Easter seasons are made more glorious and joyful when this setting is sung, especially when the additional instrumentation is added. Dioceses and parishes that employed Mass of Wisdom as the first setting during the implementation of the new translation have found themselves returning to it time and time again. It truly has become part of the “Catholic musical DNA†across the United States and beyond.

Javier Busto's Tres Cantas Cantabras for SATB a cappella, edited by John Ratledge, was written with a strong desire to not ruin such beautiful popular melodies. In the first lullaby, the child is being put to bed, while the second lullaby represents the child being warned that the boogeyman is coming. In the third and final lullaby, the child finally drifts off to sleep.

Among his compositions, Franz Lachner, the long-serving Music Director of the Court of Munich and Director of the Royal Choir, left behind a considerable number of sacred works, including two settings of the Stabat Mater. The first Stabat Mater, op. 154, from 1856 was strictly for a vocal ensemble; the second, op. 168, from 1870 (see p. 5) included strings and organ, in which the darker timbre was achieved through the absence of the violins. In its harmonic expression the second composition is especially oriented towards the, at that time, modern style of the North German School centred around Liszt and Wagner, but without ever exceeding a moderate degree of technical difficulty in the voice parts. Score available separately - see item CA.7003700.

Schubert composed the Latin Stabat Mater, D 175, between the 4th and 6th April 1815, probably without any specific commission. The text had been appointed by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727 for use at the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the 15th September. Schubert set to music only the first four of the Stabat Mater's 20 verses, but each verse is repeated with a concluding coda. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.7004300.

Contemporary criticism saw in Rheinberger's Stabat Mater op. 16 from 1864 one of the most beautiful works of this type which the present time has to offer. Distinguished through its breadth of conception and its noble tonal effect, with its rich polyphony it reaches the masterpieces of the old Italian school. In the expressive choral movements rich-sounding homophonic passages are combined with sections worked out in strict polyphony. The sustained songlike solo pieces are of a profound expression. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5001600.

Miklós Kocsár set Jacopone da Todi's Latin hymn to music in 2007. The composition is for soprano, baritone solo, mixed choir and orchestra. The nearly 20-minute-long monothematic work of one movement presents the suffering and reconciliation of Mater Dolorosa with variational technique and colourfully alternating choir and solo textures. Using the score, which includes the vocal parts, Stabat Mater can be performed with not only orchestral but also piano or organ accompaniment.

For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied. Set to the text of a 12th-century Sequence in honour of the martyr St Olav and characterized by a mellifluous plainchant-style melody, this glorious motet pulses with understated intensity. The opening drones, performed in free time and re-stated throughout, establish a quiet energy which rises until the luminescent final section, in which the heavens are called to rejoice. The original Sequence provides a stately coda. This is splendid and original music, suitable for both concert and liturgical use.
