The text for the first voicing (SSA) of this piece came to me in the fall of 2020 while teaching at Crosby High School in Crosby, Texas. My students, though enthusiastic to be back in Choir, were struggling to cope with the civil unrest around them, in addition to the pandemic. When considering how I could help them navigate this time, I realized that they were in need of some sort of consistency, of feeling grounded in themselves. As we focused on building of community and citizenship, this text and tune came to mind, each phrase highlighting an element of personal and community wellness.I lead with my spirit keeping love in the circle around me. (Social)Expressing my spirit (Occupational)Loving what I can see and cannot see, I'll take care of the vessel I am in (Physical)I love with me that's under the skin (Emotional)Taking care of my mind (Intellectual)Envisioning the me I want to be (Spiritual)I had the honor of collaborating with composer/educator Saleel Menon to create the beautiful piano accompaniment and SATB setting.Who I Want To Be opens with a solo functioning as a mantra throughout the tune. As the piece continues, voices join in unison and harmony to emphasize the intent. When the repeats in mm. 48–51 occur, invite students to share some of their own mantras and affirmations, or feel free to borrow from the words my students in the Crosby HS choir inspired me to write:Allow yourself graceI am persistentI am fragile, not brokenYou are worthyI am worthyI know that your success is not my demise! The only validation I need is my ownI believe in myselfI see youIt’s okay to not be okayBreatheI love and I am lovedPrepare yourself for not only a powerful performance, but a rewarding experience and conversations with your students.THIS is the piece you want stuck in your students’ heads!~CRM. $2.30 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

Soli SATB, SATB Choir, 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Vl, Va, Bc SKU: CA.3116405 Cantata for the 13th Sunday after Trinity. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Edited by Frieder Rempp. Arranged by Paul Horn. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Bach vocal. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Whitsun. Choral Score. Composed 1725. BWV 164. 2 pages. Duration 17 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 31.164/05. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3116405). ISBN 9790007187194. Language: German/English. This six-movement cantata was performed for the first time on 26 August 1725 in Leipzig. The text was written by Bach's Weimar cantata poet Salomon Franck and had been published earlier in 1715 in his collection Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer. Here, Bach bases his work around the form of the Weimar cantatas which take their texts from Franck's printed collection (BWV 132, 152, 161-163, 165): movements 1-5 are performed by vocal soloists, whilst only the final chorus is given to the chorus. The key concepts of the text are Barmherzigkeit [compassion], Erbarmen [mercy] and wahre Christenliebe [true Christian love]; the chamber music arrangement of the cantata corresponds with this. The two arias for tenor and alto, and the duet for soprano and bass do not contain da capo sections, but repeat the entire text in a condensed form. The instruments do not contrast as a rule, but are treated as a string group (movements 1, 4), duetting (movement 3), and as full unison (movement 5). What is remarkable in all three movements is the thematic linking of the instrumental ritornello parts with the vocal parts through which Bach achieves a kind of unity of form. SS vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 violins, cello/contrabass, organ - Level 2 SKU: CA.4060149 Composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Edited by Willi Schulze. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Joseph Haydn, Sacred vocal music. Haydn: Missa Brevis In F Xxii:1. Innovative practice aids, Sacred vocal music, Missa brevis in Latin. Single Part, Organ. Composed 1749-50 (?). Hob. XXII:1. 8 pages. Duration 14 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 40.601/49. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4060149). ISBN 9790007219321. Key: F major. Text language: Latin. Despite all of its folk-line simplicity of melody, Haydn's first mass contains a pious note that, just like its youthful verve, still was to hold fascination for him in his late years when, in 1805, he re-orchestrated his first work. The first version of the mass is considered to have been composed in 1749 or 1750. It was around the same time that Pope Benedict XIV treated questions concerning church music in his encyclical Annus qui in which he condemned the frequently operatic style of church music and demanded liturgical music that revealed an awareness of its religious purpose and that sought to fulfill it with simple means of musical expression. In its liturgical attitude Haydn's first mass is anchorded in this point of view (that to a great extent corresponded to the general standpoint of the churches of the eighteenth century).
