Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) was a Neopolitan composer and singing teacher. A rival of Handel, he formed an opera company which performed his own compositions all over Europe. He was widely acclaimed during his lifetime both as a composer and also as a pedagogue, counting Haydn among his students. Regrettably, most of his compositions have largely fallen into obscurity since his death.

While many settings of this Wendell Berry text exists, perhaps none capture its essence as beautifully as this work by Sean Ivory. With expertly crafted vocal lines, an artistic and supportive piano accompaniment, and a stunning viola part, this work for more advanced treble choirs will become a standard in the treble repertoire.

This powerful and passionate ballad by the Witch to her daughter from Sondheim's masterpiece Into the Woods is here set for the concert stage. It is a tour de force when performed with piano, but when using the optional instrumentation for 2 violins, viola, cello, celesta, and percussion, this will be a most memorable addition to a concert.
