Definitely a keeper in my repertoire! Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. With inspiration taken from composers Maurice Ravel, Arthur Benjamin and Charles Ives, Bourgeois take s a tongue-in-cheek approach to this challenging 3-movement work. While the work is infused with humor throughout, it still showcases his mastery of the wind band idiom.

In 1972, I wrote a Sonata for Two Pianos for two friends who were piano teachers at Wellington College. When in 1995 I was asked to write a work for wind band, I returned to this Sonata and have re-arranged and in the new version renamed it Fantasy Triptych. There are three movements: 1. Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin Ravel wrote 'Le Tombeau de Couperin,' Arthur Benjamin wrote 'Le Tombeau de Ravel' and so the temptation to write 'Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin' was overwhelming. At the end of the movement there is an oblique reference to Benjamin's own 'Jamaican Rumba' which accompanies a quote from an old Spanish folk song 'Loro, enciende el hervidor de agua.' 2. Mr. Bolt goes for a ride in his motor car, and Monsieur Ravel turns in his grave. The movement is dedicated to an old friend, Geoffrey Bolt, who adores the music of Ravel. but at the time of writing was learning to drive. He always described his vehicle as a motor car. To describe him as an impatient motorist would be a gross understatement. The refined suavity of Ravel's music was in complete contrast to these early manifestations of road rage, hence the central angry outburst. 3. The War March of the Ostriches The music of Charles Ives was fascinating me at the time of writing this movement and some of the influence has rubbed off in this rondo-like march. At the end there is a quote from the very beginning of the first movement. The title was inspired by the amusing antics of a group of ostriches during a visit to Bristol Zoo.

Ye Olde English Hunt comes to life through this colorful and humorous musical portrait. The opening pastoral scene is augmented with bird whistles, duck calls, and whatever wildlife your percussion section can conjure up. A series of trumpet calls, followed by a chorus of A Hunting We Will Go leads us into the frenzy of the hunt, complete with barking dogs and the galloping of horse hooves. Great fun for the band and especially your audience, this is a lighter, tongue in cheek selection for all.

Everything started when two Frenchmen, Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, after having sold over ten records with their band, the Ritchie Family, decided to try out something new. The basic idea was to form a new group inspired by the American male myths of the seventies: cowboys, Indians, men in leather clothes, soldiers and policemen. This is how the Village People were born.Their secret was their energy, cheerfulness and tongue in cheek humour combined with strong disco beat and an arresting visual presence. Even now a Village People song is guaranteed to fill the dance floor in any club or disco. The Best of Village People is a medley including the following pieces: In theNavy,Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man.

The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music.
