Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band â??Pershings Ownâ?, led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the worldâ??s most iconic monuments, memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosenthree of these as the inspiration for this piece: â??The Lincoln Memorialâ?? in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; â??The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorialâ?? on which steps the iconic speech â??I havea dreamâ?? was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kingsâ?? speech; and the â??Encoreâ?? statue in memory of the world famousAfrican-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. This march, opus 470 in Johann Strauss the Younger’s oeuvre, was dedicated to the k.u.k. (Royal) Infanterie-Regiment ‘Hoch und Deutschmeister No. 4’ on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. In 1896 this joyful event was celebrated with a grand concert featuring no less than seven military bands, with more than 350 musicians performing. Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899) wrote the KAISER-WALZER, Op. 437 (EMPEROR WALTZES) to celebrate the toast of friendship that Franz Joseph I extended when he visited Wilhelm II in 1889. Fritz Simrock, his publisher, diplomatically suggested the name of the waltz so that it could be attributed to either emperor, depending on the circumstances of each performance. Originally titled HAND IN HAND, its first performance took place on October 21 of that year in Berlin. The operetta The Gipsy Baron is, together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat), the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance, original musical ideas, compelling Viennese dances, fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias, were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem, however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality, another melody was chosen.
