Ralph Vaughan Williams' (1872-1958) English Folk Songs Suite, IRV 16, consists of three movements, the first two of which are based on the folk songs Seventeen Come Sunday and My Bonny Boy; the third adapts four songs from the Somerset region collected by Cecil Sharp. The English Folk Songs Suite quotes the Christmas carol Dives and Lazarus, which Vaughan Williams later published five variations of for harp and string orchestra. Gordon Jacob, a student of Vaughan Williams, arranged this version for orchestra. An earlier version of the English Folk Songs Suite, written for military band, premiered at Kneller Hall in Twickenham, England in July 1923. In 1880, Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band, which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert. Last Spring komt uit de Two Elegiac Melodies for String Orchestra, opus 34. An exceptional band piece that utilizes music John wrote especially for the PBS production of Within These Walls, which showcases the history of our Presidential residence during its 200th year. Originally scored and recorded by the U.S. Marine Band with strings, John later arranged the music for band only and it will be performed by the Marine Band on tour. This published arrangement is slightly simplified and shortened from that version. Sections of the piece represent various important time periods in the history of The White House.
