Psalm XIX: The Heavens Declare was written by the Italian composer, writer, and theorist Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). By profession Marcello served as a governor and chamber-lain in Italy, although he is well-known for his harsh satires of contemporary coposers, such as Vivaldi and Lotti, As a composer, Marcello was ingenious and imaginative; his works include opera librettos, concertos, vocal music, and psalm settings in cantana style. This particular psalm setting has become popular for organ, and, thanks to the talent of arranger Barry Toombs, is part of the repertoire of the Westwind Brass. Mr. Toombs's brass quintet arrangement of The Heavens Declare calls for the optional B Piccolo Trumpet in the 1st Trumpet part. It is preferred that the 1st trumpet player use a piccolo trumpet. However, if one is not available, B trumpet may be uses as a substitute.

The Trattamars (Tratta March) was originally written for ‘Il trattamento miracolo’, an ensemble of five, performing light-hearted musical acts for the young and the old. This march is played when the members of the group appear on stage. The Dutch composer of the march, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden, studied classical saxophone as well as band conducting and composition at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg. He is a baritone saxophonist with the Orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Band of the Royal Netherlands Air force). He is also active as a freelance conductor and composer.De Trattamars is oorspronkelijk geschreven voor ‘Il trattamento miracolo’, een vijfkoppig ensemble dat ludieke muzikale voorstellingen maakt voor jong en oud. Also available for euphonium and piano (HL44010860) Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Ms. Marzella was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund (as a result of winning BBC Radio 2's Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004), which allowed her to commission a series of new works for euphonium. Scaramouche continues Sparke's series of works that highlights the Italian theatre tradition of commedia dell'arte. Like its predecessors Pantomime and Harlequin, Scaramouche draws on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterized by the symbolic happy/sad masks of European theatre. A slow, expressive ballad followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the instrument, and the soloist to display its full capabilities.
