Le motet a revêtu différentes formes au cours de son évolution et a joué un rôle important dans le développement de la musique polyphonique vocale entre les XIIIe et XVIIIe siècles. En janvier 1773, Mozart séjourne à Milan en compagnie de son père et y écrit une oeuvre originale pour le castrat Venanzio Rauzzini : le motet Exultate, Jubilate KV 165.
