Inspired by the release of Nelson Mandela in the early 1990s, Hymn for Africa pays tribute to the sense of dignity and peace that he brought not only to South Africa, but around the entire globe. As the beautifully lush chorale unfolds, quietly undulating drums murmur in the distance and gradually build into a rousing climax.

Hymn for Africa was written as part of a project known as Brass Band Aid. When I was asked to compose a piece with relevance to Africa for the project, I began to think of all the things that I associate with Africa. I have vivid memories from my childhood of the hard-hitting news reports from the famines of the early/mid 1980's (and the concerts that followed). I also associate Africa with amazing animal life - the many species from snakes to birds to lions, with their many colours. But more than these associations, there is one memory that stands out amongst all others. The release of Nelson Mandela in the early 1990's had a profound effect not only in South Africa, but all over the continent of Africa, as well as the World as a whole. The fact that one man can achieve this with peace and great dignity will always be an inspiration, not only to me, but many, many millions of humans around the globe. Hymn for Africa is inspired by this sense of dignity and peace. A simple eight bar melody is the basis of the composition. A drone is then added, before a chorale, and finally a rousing climax when the percussion and full band enter. The piece dedicated to Bob and Briony Thompson in admiration.

The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody, the hymnresounds in full glory.

De slag bij Varlar vond plaats in het jaar 1454 in de buurt van de stad Coesfeld. Rob Goorhuis nam deze historische gebeurtenis als bron van inspiratie voor zijn gelijknamige werk. Beginnend met een hymne, refereert de componist aan de inwijding van een kapel, om vervolgens met trompetgeschal de veldslag aan te kondigen. Het houwen en kletteren van de zwaarden, maar ook de klagende stemmen van de gewonden nemen de krijgsgeluiden over, om tenslotte uit te monden in de klanken van de hymne uit het begin. Dit keer om de glorieuze overwinning te vieren…!

Die Schlacht von Varlar fand im Jahre 1454 in der Gegend der Stadt Coesfeld statt. Rob Goorhuis’ musikalisches Luftbild der historischen Ereignisse beginnt mit einer Hymne zur Einweihung einer Kapelle, dann kündigen Trompeten und Posaunen die bevorstehende Schlacht an. Im folgenden Getümmel ist Säbelgerassel, aber auch das Wehklagen der Verwundeten zu hören, bevor mit der Hymne aus dem Eingangsteil der glorreiche Sieg gefeiert wird.

La bataille de Varlar a eu lieu en l’an 1454 autour de la ville de Coesfeld (Allemagne). Telle une vue aérienne, l’oeuvre composée par Rob Goorhuis brosse le portrait des événements qui s’enchaînent les uns après les autres : un hymne en honneur de la chapelle près du champ de bataille, puis l’affrontement venir, le bruit des bottes et le cliquetis des sabres, les gémissements des blessés puis nouveau l’hymne de l’introduction, repris cette fois dans un tempo plus rapide car il est destiné célébrer la victoire.

Il brano inizia con un inno che simboleggia l’inaugurazione di una cappella, mentre le trombe e i tromboni annunciano l’imminente inizio delle ostilit . Segue un passaggio caratterizzato dai suoni tipici della cruenta battaglia, ma anche dai lamenti dei feriti, che anticipano il glorioso inno della vittoria.

Journey back to ancient Greece and view a place of long-gone legend. Follow the trail to the Kingdom of Ithaca, from the heroic palace, to a place of tranquility, to a reckless dance of abandon, to the return of Odysseus. The melodic material used in 200 B.C. is from a two thousand year old Greek hymn to Apollo. The legendary adventures of Odysseus as described by Homer in the Odyssey (ca. 700 B.C.) provide the programmatic material. The music is freely based upon the First Delphic Hymn (or Paen to Apollo), composed ca. 200 B.C. The source is a transcription appearing on pages 363 - 367 of Ancient and Oriental Music, Edited by Egon Wellesz (Oxford University Press: London, 1957). Each movement of the work depicts a key event in the epic Homeric poem, as described below. Movement I: Intrada - The first four notes of this movement, C - Bb - G - Bb, are the melodic and harmonic foundation for the entire work. These pitches, introduced in a simple and direct manner, are subsequently developed in more complex fashions throughout the suite. Following this stately introduction is a militaristic fanfare that introduces the dotted-eighth and sixteenth-note figure later reprised in the second and fourth movements. Indeed, all the musical ideas which will be central to the remaining movements first appear in the Intrada. This movement depicts the grandeur of Odysseus and his kingdom in Ithaca, and establishes the heroic mood of the entire work. Movement II: Ballad - After a brief restatement of the opening dotted-eighth-and-sixteenth fanfare, the second movement extracts the falling third (Bb to G) from the C - Bb - G - Bb motif and extends it and expands it into a haunting solo for alto saxophone. The C - Bb - G - Bb motif appears again (see measures 23 - 33 in trumpets) as counterpoint to this melody, now pulsing through the thick texture of the band. Many performers have come to view the Ballad as the emotional epicenter of the entire suite; my conception of the Ballad is to achieve a union of pathos and strength. Programmatically, this movement depicts Odysseus's son, Telemachos, as he both longs for Odysseus's return and stoically defends his father's kingdom. Movement III: Dance - It will take Odysseus twenty years to return to Ithaca. During his absence, noblemen besiege his palace, violating the sanctity of the household and seeking the hand of his wife, Penelope. This movement depicts the wanton revelries that result. The original four-note motif is chromatically altered and the meter is made irregular. The rapid tempo, driving percussion, and angular meter and melodies combine in an explosion of reckless abandon. Movement IV: March Building from a delicate woodwind ensemble accompanied by finger cymbals to a fully orchestrated statement replete with thundering percussion, this is a resounding march of victory. Odysseus has returned in triumph to restore dignity to his household and to reclaim the throne of the Kingdom of Ithaca. This has become a staple of band literature. Claude Smith is well known for taking hymn tunes and creating wonderful pieces of music. Trumpet and trombone trios are featured in the opening statement, followed by free-flowing Rubato flute solo. A piccolo and bassoon duet follow in the next section. Variations of the theme appear in the fugato section, followed by the full chorale. The audience may sing the hymn tune during the full chorale. The triumphant ending features the horn section which leads to an emotional finale. God of Our Fathers is also available for full orchestra, and an edition for SATB Choir with piano/organ, which may be used in a massed band/orchestra/choir setting as well. Program Notes: Stylistically diverse -- tranquil, spirited pastoral, sensitive, energetic -- exhibiting a remarkable palette, the five movements of SINFONIA IX form a unique symphonic statement. Movement I, Prelude, is about contrasts: A lazy, smooth, motive in brasses alternates with, and then joins, an active and detached motive in woodwinds. The spirited Movement II, Morley's Ghost, is an intricate canonic collage and homage to that venerable theoretician & composer, Thomas Morley. By contrast, movement III, Dialog, speaks in a relaxed, lyrical, and pastoral language as it develops its gently rising and falling motives. Movement IV, Waltz, innocently celebrates the joys of childhood with a lilting melody and rondo form. For the rousing Finale, Movement V begins with a martial call of repeated-notes, heralding a headstrong journey of power and excitement. Like a number of the composer's other works, SINFONIA IX is based on earlier material: A brass sextet, written in 1966 when the composer was nineteen years old, forms the raw material for the first, third and fifth movements, while a later work, Martin's Waltz (a children's piece for flutes and clarinets composed in 1975) is the basis of the fourth movement. The second movement, however, is a fanciful contrapuntal commentary on Thomas Morley's 16th-century canzonet, Fire and Lightning. SINFONIA IX is dedicated to John Raforth, a distinguished band director and music educator at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin. The work was commissioned by his friends and former students, and was completed in 1977. Its first publication some twenty years later is a result of the increasing attention paid by university band directors to the earlier Sinfonias, particularly Sinfonia III (Hymns and Dances); Sinfonia V (Sinfonia Sacra et Profana); and now, Sinfonia IX. Whereas the first two works are wind ensemble compositions that have been championed equally by the concert band, Sinfonia IX is the composer's first college-level Sinfonia written especially for concert band. Commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra of Duluth, Minnesota, this work honors the life and legacy of one if its own members, James Stellmaker, who enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a public school music educator in Duluth. In contrast to a typical elegy, Twin Ports Overture has a celebratory feel, sparkling and colorful. Brass is prominent in many parts of the work, especially featuring Mr. Stellmaker's instrument, the trombone. The well-known hymn Praise Ye the Lord, The Almighty, which was played at his memorial service, is featured prominently throughout the work.

Written as a companion piece with Border Dance (JB117), Stranger At My Door is written in memory of Peg Bowden, a resident of southern Arizona, who was active in groups assisting migrants by providing food, shelter, clothing and medical assistance. Peg's book Stranger At My Door chronicles her involvements with a migrant who appeared at her doorstep one Christmas Eve in desperate need. Composer Jack Stamp opens this tone poem with a rendition of O Little Town Of Bethlehem accompanied out of time by a haunting melody in the low winds. An original melody, Peg's Theme and the hymn tune Bera (The Hymn of the Good Samaritan from 1849) are first presented plainly, then interwoven in a rhythmic fantasia of fugato fragments. Peg's Theme returns in its fully-harmonized form and the work ends in peaceful introspection. Solos for Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Bass Clarinet, as well as solis for trumpets and trombones are featured. Although Stranger At My Door incorporates a well known Christmas carol, it is appropriate for all seasons due to its timeless message of selflessness in the face of danger.

Missa Brevis is a major work for choir and brass band for performance in church or in the concert hall. For this mass, there are many performance possibilities depending on the musicians available. In addition to the standard orchestration ofchoir and band a brass quartet can also play the choral parts. Missa Brevis, geschreven voor koor en blaasorkest, werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (dir. Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (Frankrijk), ter gelegenheid van het duizendstegeboortejaar van paus Leo IX. In zijn geboorteplaats, Éguisheim (Elzas, Frankrijk), vond op 23 juni 2002 de première van deze mis plaats onder leiding van de componist. Het betrof een live-registratie voor de Franse televisiezender France 2. Demisdelen Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus en Agnus Dei lenen zich uitstekend voor zowel de katholieke als de protestantse liturgie. Er zijn voor deze mis diverse uitvoeringsmogelijkheden mogelijk, aangezien er sprake is van eenvariabele bezetting. Een instrumentale uitvoering behoort uitdrukkelijk tot de mogelijkheden, indien het scherp koper de koorpartijen vertegenwoordigt. In deze optie is het wenselijk dat het scherp koper zich separaat opstelt van de rest van hetorkest (bijvoorbeeld op een galerij), zodat het idee van dubbelkorigheid wordt benaderd. Bij een uitvoering voor groot koor werkt het scherp koper zeer goed als ondersteuning. In dat geval kan de dynamiek van het koper iets worden aangepast,aangezien deze in eerste instantie bedoeld is voor een instrumentale versie. Ook kan men ervoor kiezen het scherp koper helemaal weg te laten ten gunste van het koor. Bij begeleiding van kleinere koren kan men kiezen voor een klein ensemble uit hetorkest. Dit kan ook een naar wens samengesteld kwartet zijn. Voor de uitvoering van deze mis ligt het voor de hand een van deze opties te kiezen. Als alternatief is echter ook een uitvoering mogelijk met een combinatie van deze opties (vocaal/instrumentaal) - niet slechts vanuit een artistiek motief (afwisseling), maar ook vanuit een praktisch motief, voor het geval dat het koor bijvoorbeeld slechts twee delen heeft ingestudeerd. Bij een volledige bezetting kan de dirigent deinstrumentatie naar believen afwisselen. Hierbij kan ook het scherp koper in de begeleiding een rol krijgen (in plaats van ondersteuning van het koor). Zo zijn de volgende combinaties mogelijk:

1. clarinet choir (van Es-klarinet tot basklarinet)

2. clarinet choir saxofoons

3. zacht koper (bugels, hoorns, euphoniums, bassen)

4. scherp koper (2 trompetten / 2 trombones)

5. dubbelrieten (eventueel fluit, eventueel contrabas)

In een uitvoering voor brassband en koor is het in de meeste gevallen aan te bevelen de optie voor scherp koper weg te laten. Het koor zingt zelfstandig, begeleid door een volledige brassband. Missa Brevis est une messe pour Orchestre d’Harmonie et Choeur composée la demande du Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir. : Philippe Pfisterer) de Guebwiller en France, l’occasion des célébrations dumillénaire de la naissance du Pape Léon IX Éguisheim. La création mondiale a eu lieu le 23 juin 2002 sous la direction du compositeur, et a été diffusée en direct sur la chaîne de télévision nationale France 2. Les différentes parties de cettemesse (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus et Agnus Dei) conviennent autant la liturgie catholique qu’ la liturgie protestante. Missa Brevis peut être interprétée dans différentes combinaisons instrumentales. Ellepeut être jouée dans une version purement instrumentale, où les cuivres prennent en charge la partie vocale. En tel cas, il est conseillé de placer les cuivres l’écart de la formation (sur une estrade, par exemple) de façon reproduire l’idée dedeux groupes indépendants. Dans le cadre d’une interprétation avec un grand Choeur, les cuivres jouent un rôle de soutien. Leurs nuances doivent alors être adaptées dans la mesure où elles ont été écrites, l’origine, pour une version instrumentale.Il est également possible de ne pas faire intervenir les cuivres et de privilégier le Choeur. Pour accompagner de petits ensembles vocaux, il faut opter pour une formation instrumentale réduite voire même un Quatuor (instrumentation au choix). Pourl’interprétation de cette messe l’un des choix proposés ci-dessus s’impose. Il existe néanmoins une alternative qui consiste interpréter cette oeuvre en combinant ces options (vocales / instrumentales). Cela peut être bénéfique tant d’un point devue artistique (variante) que pratique dans le cas où le Choeur n’a travaillé que deux mouvements de la messe. Si le chef dispose de deux formations complètes (Choeur et Orchestre d’Harmonie), il peut varier l’instrumentation selon ses préférences. ce moment-l , il peut confier un rôle d’accompagnement et non de soutien aux cuivres de sa formation. Les combinaisons suivantes peuvent être formées :
