Mauro Giuliani was born in Bisceglie Italy in 1781. He was one of the most famous guitarists and composers in the early 19th century. In 1806 he settled in Vienna where he was celebrated as a virtuoso composer and teacher and stayed there until 1819. Via Venice and Rome he came to Naples where he spent the last five years of his life until he died on the 8th May 1829. From his vast oeuvre comprising about 220 works the two Duets for Flute or Violin and Guitar Op.25 and Op.85 are his key works from the genre that have been most played and recorded.This edition of the Grand Duo Concertant Op.85 for Flute or Violin and Guitar has been editedby Henner Eppel and Volker Hƶh.The solo flute (or violin) part is also included on a separate insert.

Having received a degree in Chemistry his fascination with the endless possibilities of the Guitar caused him to abandon science infavour of music. Despite having never formally studied music he is regarded as one of the foremost composers for Guitar of the 20th century. HisĀ English Suite No. 4 was composed for Flute (orRecorder) and Guitar and published in 1979 as his opus 82. Scored in three movements it makes use of traditional English folksongs: All in a Garden Green/The Rambling Sailor - Scarborough Fair - The Two Magicians.
