French composer, Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer, conductor, teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional, Piece In D for French Horn and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Piece In D, Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated, yet true to the 19th century French tradition. Elements of the work include include, chromaticism, use of a wide tessitura, complex rhythms, scalic passages and wide intervals. For all advanced Horn players, Büsser's Piece In D is essential to a varied repertoire.

The scoring of Schubert's Auf dem Strom (On the River) for voice, horn and piano is reminiscent of that of the Hirt auf dem Felsen (Shepherd on the Rock, HN 969) with obligato clarinet. Both pieces were written in 1828 and each one upon a musician's request - in this case that of the horn player Rudolf Lewy. Schubert gave the first performance of Auf dem Strom with the latter and the tenor Ludwig Tietze on 26 March 1828 in Vienna. It was such a success that it was soon performed again, and the press raved about it being an 'indescribable treat for the ears?. Par POOT MARCEL. Belgian composer, Marcel Poot (1901-1988) was a professional composer, professor and musician. He studied at the Belgian Conservatory and went on to attain success as an Organist and composer. His substantial compositions for wind and brass are still performed to this day, Legende for Horn in F and Piano being no exception. In 1925, Poot and several of his contemporaries founded 'The Synthetists', a group to rival 'Les Six' in France. They wished to inject dynamism into the conservative Belgian music scene through the composition of modern pieces. Legende for Horn andPiano reflects this, whilst maintaining recognisable musical elements. Poot 's Legende, published in 1958, is in Ternary Form, ending with a fat, allegro coda.
