Johannes Umbreit (piano reduction); Michael Schneidt (fingering) Two copies needed for performance It is almost impossible to tell from listening to them that Bach's extremely popular concerti for harpsichord were probably his own transcriptions of solo concerti which had originally been composed for violin or a woodwind instrument. The outer movements of the second concerto, in E major, probably written around 1738, sparkle with joy, while the expressive melodic lines of the middle movement, the Siciliano in C-sharp minor, transport the listener to the realm of his Passion music. G. Henle Publishers presents this repertoire standard in an Urtext edition with an extensive commentary. The study edition (HN 7381) features the complete orchestral score; the piano reduction (HN 1381) contains the solo part as well as a very playable piano reduction of the score prepared by Johannes Umbreit for practical use.

The book, musician, entertainer, teacher, and recording artist Carol Stober provides melody lines, lyrics, chord symbols, and melody tablature for 35 tunes she learned in Appalachia. The stories woven through the music portray a mixture of life situations that were ever-present in the difficult struggle for survival of our ancestors. The lyrics of many of these songs, although sometimes harsh, give insight into the values of the Appalachian people. The autoharp tablature provides detailed indications for different types of thumb and finger strokes, plucking, and string pinching.

??During my career spanning half a century, like all my fellow harpists I constantly had to grapple with the commonly held view that the harp has neither music nor history of its own.Fortunately, over the years I have been able to give the lie to this myth and have tried to bring to light some of the vast repertoire, both early and modern, expressly composed for this instrument which has been treated somewhat as an outsider in the musical world. The research work for my books on Italian and Swiss harp music was plain sailing because source materials were specific titles and title pages. Were I to write books on French, German, Austrian, British, Bohemian, Spanish, Portuguese or Scandinavian harp music, the work involved would be equally smooth and straightforward. However, where Dutch music is concerned, the approach is rather different, because here it is the painters, treatise-writers and historians who provide the evidence and guidance necessary to discover the musical customs and traditions where the harp played a significant part.Performers looking for pieces of music may use this book as follows: chapter II deals with treatises, chapter III with paintings, chapter IV with history and research accounts. Chapters V and VI are concerned with confusions in terminology. Chapter VII describes recent developments and chapters VIII and IX cover composers and pieces of music. Libraries and publishers are listed with their addresses in chapters X and XI, and finally chapter XII consists of the index based on the various groups of performers. In this last chapter harpists will find the composers most suited to their programme, and can then turn to chapters VIII and IX for details. The actual pieces can be obtained by consulting chapters X and XI. I wish you every success in your search, in your rehearsals and in your concerts !In order to define what is Dutch or non-Dutch in early music, I have followed the current approach, i.e. all art and history prior to the separation of the ??Seven Provinces in the 16th century is the common heritage of the Low Countries, whereas everything pertaining to those courageous lands from then onwards is specifically Dutch..

Tangled is Disney's popular animated film from 2010, based on the German fairy tale Rapunzel. This book includes two songs from the movie, arranged for lever or pedal harp by Sylvia Woods: I See the Light and Healing Incantation. Both pieces include lyrics, fingerings, and lever or pedal changes. I See the Light is the love song between Rapunzel and Flynn, sung in the boat during the lantern ceremony. This 5-page intermediate arrangement is in the key of C with F and G lever changes throughout. The range is 31 strings, from the C 2 octaves below middle C up to the E 2 octaves and 2 strings above middle C. The one-page Healing Incantation is the song that Rapunzel sings when her hair creates the magic. It is in the key of 1 sharp, with G and C lever changes. It can be played by advanced beginners with experience in making lever changes. The range is 22 strings, from the E almost 2 octaves below middle C, up to the E 9 strings above middle C. It can be played on many 26-string harps, if played an octave higher than written. Both pieces are included in this sheet music.

Say Something is an original song by the American duo A Great Big World. The lyrics are about letting go when a relationship ends. It became an international hit when Christina Aguilera joined A Great Big World on a re-recorded version in 2013. Sylvia Woods has made a 4-page advanced beginner to intermediate arrangement, playable on either lever or pedal harp. This music features a pedal point (also called a pedal note or pedal tone), which is a sustained or continually repeated note that is held constant while harmonies change in other parts. A pedal point is usually found in the bass, but here it is in the middle register. Virtually every measure includes a middle C note on the downbeat. Sometimes it is played with the right hand, and at other times with the left. But it is almost always there. This pedal point harmony is what originally drew me into this beautiful piece of music the first time I heard it on the radio. The music is in the key of C, and no sharping levers are required, as there are no lever changes. Fingerings, lyrics and chord symbols are included. The harp range required is 24 strings from a low C up to an E. It can be played on 24-string to 26-string harps with a C as the lowest string if you play both hands an octave higher than written.

Whizzing, growling and rattling – you can produce all kinds of sounds with the harp, not just the fairy-tale shimmer and glissandos that you first think of. Lotta Wennäkoski composed Sigla for harp and orchestra (2021-2022) in close collaboration with the harpist Sivan Magen, to whom the concerto is dedicated. The title of the concerto, Sigla, has different meanings in different languages. In Italian, it means a jingle; in Icelandic, it means sailing; and in Tagalog, spoken in the Philippines, it means vivaciousness or enthusiasm. Wennäkoski has not specifically referenced these in the movements of the concerto as such, but she does allow that the various meanings of the word may be identified with the music according to the listener’s perception. The recording of the work (Ondine ODE1420-2) was premiered with the Gramophone award as the the best release in the contemporary category in October 2023.This product is the solo part. The orchestral material is available for hire from the publisher.Duration: 19'Instrumentation:Harp solo – equipped with paint brush, tuning key and a plastic hair clip2 Flutes (2nd doubling piccolo)2 Oboes2 Clarinets in Bb2 Bassoons2 Horns in F2 Trumpets in C – trumpets and trombone doubling an egg slicerBass trombone attached to a piece of wood or a flat cardboard boxPercussion (2 players)Percussion I: crotales, vibraphone, 5 gongs (a#, bn, c’, e’, f’), bass drum, cymbal, guiro, bell tree, shell chimes, whip, lion’s roar and different beaters including a bow, superball stck and wire brushesPercussion II: tam-tam, cymbal, snare drum, 2 cowbells, 2 temple blocks (med/lg), triangle (small/med), vibraslap and different beaters including a bow, wire brushes and superball stickPiano – equipped with a plectrum, wire brushes and 2 soft percussion beatersStrings.

‘Once again the French musicologist Denis Herlin, who mastered the harpsichord under the tutelage of such keyboard legends as Kenneth Gilbert and Huguette Dreyfus, has presented an exemplary edition of a classic from the harpsichord repertoire.’ (Jury of the German Music Edition Prize on BA 10844)Bärenreiter presents Book II of Couperin’s “Pièces de clavecin”, first published in 1717, In addition the eight preludes and one allemande from his treatise “L’Art de toucher le clavecin” are included in the appendix. For the first time Denis Herlin has evaluated the many later impressions of the original print, most of which he unearthed himself in international libraries. By preserving the essential features of the original print while largely dispensing with disruptive page-turns within the pieces, the volume brings modern performers close to the special sound of this music. Rounding off this pioneering new edition are an extensive Foreword, notes on historical performance practice, a comprehensive glossary, facsimile pages and a detailed Critical Commentary.
