Let It Groove is all about the pocket! The feeling of the chart is reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man or Lee Morgan's Sidewinder. The bass line is anchored to the bass drum pattern, and the enclosed rhythm exercises are an excellent tool for creating a cohesive rhythmic concept throughout the band. The solo section is a 12 bar Bb blues and can be opened up to include several soloists.

This playful medium-tempo swinger features a smooth, self-assured melody that glides along a cool, slightly altered blues progression. Trumpet and alto sax carry the melody at first before passing it off to the brass section; saxophones cleverly punctuate the brass section with heavily accented chords. The saxophones take the melody the third time around, while the brass offers incisive interjections here and there. A solo section follows that features just the right amount of background writing that enhances the proceedings without ever getting in the way; the solo section may be repeated as desired to feature additional soloists. A swinging ensemble follows the solos, starting off at a simmer and gradually heating up to the exciting full-ensemble shout chorus. Don’t Let These Blues Fool You is sure to be a favorite for concert and contest!

Feature your young piano player on this classic Boogie Woogie by Andy Clark. Quite playable and tremendously appealing to audiences, this is a great way to let your pianist get out of the shadows of the band and into the limelight. The Piano solo will sound great on either acoustic or electric keyboards and the piano part is completely written out so that it requires no improvisation.
