Par DE HAAN JAN. Inspiration was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Kanotonal Musikverband in Switzerland in 1993. The composition begins with an A-theme written in a Phrygian tonality and, after an enormous climax, moves on into a quicker B-section, characterized by the use of wide interval jumps. Then follows the development in which both themes return individually and together. Peace and quiet is restored in the slow middle movement, based on the B-theme. The movement comes to a close with a tutti B-theme, brutally interrupted by fragments from the A-theme. Without a break, the final movement of this contrastive piece develops from these fragments. The theme of this extremelyrhythmical closing movement is built up of elements from the A-theme, whilst the B-theme (from the slow middle movement) returns in full once more. Before the piece comes to a close in a resounding fortissimo, the cornet soloist performs the A-theme from the back of the auditorium, to special effect. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan’s twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, “Soli Deo Gloria” (Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian comopser Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Saëns organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond. Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from ‘Jan de Haan’ and ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, resulting in the tonerow: DEGAH. This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

Loyalty Among Friends. Par HOUBEN KEVIN. Hidden Light - Loyauté entre amis, a été composé à l'occasion des 75 ans d’ancienneté de M. Leo Knoben au Royal Brass Band 'Eendracht Waubach'. (NL) Par fierté et admiration pour ce jubilé exceptionnel, mais aussi par gratitude pour ses nombreuses années d'engagement en tant que musicien et membre du conseil d'administration, son ensemble a décidé de commander une œuvre mémorable au compositeur Kevin Houben. Cette mission a donné naissance au merveilleux choral Hidden Light, pour lequel le compositeur Kevin Houben Ce dernier s'est inspiré des émotions et des oppositions suivantes : petit - majestueux, soumis - royal et simplicité - gloire. L'œuvre commence dans une atmosphère très modeste et sombre. La composition évolue par la suite vers un son grandiose avec de belles mélodies, explorant toute la richesse et les couleurs de l'orchestre d'harmonie 'symphonique'. La variété intéressante de l'orchestration, le cadre intime du début et les passages tutti larges et majestueux qui suivent, rendent l'œuvre très nuancée, agréable à jouer et à écouter. Avec Hidden Light, Kevin Houben a de nouveau su créer une composition expressive et puissante, de nature très intime. Cette œuvre émouvante est un hommage à un homme exceptionnel qui a été là pour « son » orchestre toute sa vie, avec un cœur chaleureux pour « ses » musiciens. Par WAESPI OLIVER. Hypercube est une narration musicale inspirée en partie de l?architecture de la Grande Arche de la Défense à Paris, dont la forme a été comparée à un hypercube. Prenant cet édifice repère comme point de départ, cette pièce explore la poésie et la réalité de paysages urbains. Au cours de l??uvre, des éléments contrastants sont jetés dans un développement dramatique et virtuose créant des sections extensives appelées « Le Vertige ». Le thème Clouds (« nuages ») revient plus tard en une série de solos lyriques. Dans la partie finale du morceau, les deux thèmes de Vertige et Hypercube se retrouvent à l?arrière-plan lors d?une accélération continuelle qui représente une sorte d?escalier de Penrose. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen.
