Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ has been named after John Donne’s poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l’ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version.

Het gedicht Jealousy van Donneen ook het gelijknamige schilderij van Edvard Munch inspireerden Jacob de Haan om dit werk te componeren. En het is hem goed gelukt om alle emoties die bij jaloerse gevoelens horen muzikaal te verklanken! Een treffend concertwerkdat u niet mag missen…

Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ wurde nach dem gleichnamigen Gedicht von John Donne benannt. Eifersucht (Jealousy) vermag eine ganze Reihe von Emotionen auszulösen - von Enttäuschung, Trauer, Bedauern bis hin zu Ärger und Wut. Jacob de Haan ist es gelungen, all diese Gefühle in Musik umzusetzen. Ein bewegendes Konzertwerk, das Sie sich nicht entgehen lassen sollten.

Elegy I: Jealousy (Élégie 1 : La Jalousie) a emprunté son nom au poème éponyme de John Donne. La jalousie peut déclencher de nombreuses émotions qui vont de la déception, de la peine et du regret la colère ou la folie. Toutes ces émotions ont trouvé leur place dans cette composition, inspirée de trois formes d’art différentes : la poésie (Elegy I), la peinture (La Jalousie - Edvard Munch) ; la chanson (Je ne l’ose dire - Pierre Certon). La résonance affective et émotionnelle est forte. En un instant, l’auditeur est touché par ce qu'il entend.

This medley has been inspired by Peter Kleine Schaars’ previous experience that every concert should end with a selection of unbeatable melodies. With this in mind Peter Kleine Schaars has chosen some of his favourite pop songs and combined them to form this lively medley. Hits include That’s the Way I Like It, Boogie Down, One Day I’ll Fly Away, Fantasy and Street Life. A fantastic way to bring any concert to a close.

Jarenlang luisterde Peter Kleine Schaars met zijn jazzkwartet diverse festiviteiten en gelegenheden op. Het ensemble wisselde indien gewenst het jazzrepertoire af met pop en latin. De ervaring leerde de muzikanten hoe ze elk feestdynamisch konden afsluiten met een uur onovertroffen repertoire. Kleine Schaars koos hieruit zelf zijn favoriete popstukken en arrangeerde ze in zijn levendige medley That’s the Way (I Like Them).

Viele Jahre lang unterhielt Peter Kleine Schaars' Jazz-Quartett bei diversen Festlichkeiten und Gelegenheiten - je nach Wunsch mit Jazz oder auch mit Pop und lateinamerikanischer Musik. Dabei stellten die Musiker immer wieder fest, dass eine Stunde absolut spitzenmäßiges Pop-Repertoire der perfekte Schlusspunkt einer jeder schwungvollen Party ist. Aus dieser praktischen Erfahrung heraus wählte Kleine Schaars seine Lieblings-Pop-Stücke aus und arrangierte sie in vorliegendem lebhaften Medley mit dem Titel That's the Way (I Like Them). Unschlagbar in jedem unterhaltsamen Konzertprogramm!

In the tripartite 'Cowboy Suite' Alan Laken takes us to the Wild West, the domain of cowboys, indians, trappers and other fortune hunters.
Around 1890 the west coast of America was reached, which in effect meant the end of the Wild West.
Its stories, however, survived and have been a source of inspiration for many books, films, and, of course, music. Some characters, such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Buffalo Bill are forever linked to these tales.

In the 'Cowboy Suite' we first hear the 'Hoedown'. At the end of an exhausting workday the labourers used to lay down their tools, among others the 'hoes' and spontaneously began to play music on the instruments which they then possessed (guitars, fiddles, and banjos) and to dance.
After being jolted on the 'Wagon Trail' we reach the third part, the 'Cowboy Roundup'. In this last part it becomes clear that as a cattle driver it is imperative to stay firmly seated in the saddle. As the cattle are rounded up, i.e. driven together, spectacular things happen.

In de driedelige 'Cowboy Suite' neemt Alan Laken ons mee naar het 'Wilde Westen', het domein van cowboys, indianen, pelsjagers en andere gelukzoekers.
Rond 1890, werd de westkust van Amerika bereikt, dit betekende het eindevan het Wilde Westen.
Maar de verhalen bleven en waren een bron voor vele boeken, films en natuurlijk muziek. Enkele personages die onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn met deze verhalen zijn: Jesse James, Billy the Kid, en BuffaloBill.

In de 'Cowboy Suite' horen we eerst de ‘Hoedown’. Aan het einde van een zware werkdag legden de landarbeiders hun werktuig, o.a. de 'Hoe' (schoffel) neer en begonnen met de dan beschikbare instrumenten (Gitaar, Fiddleen Banjo) spontaan te musiceren en te dansen.
In de ‘Wagon Trial’ hobbelen we naar het derde deel, de ‘Cowboy Roundup’. Dat je als veedrijver goed in je zadel moet zitten blijkt wel in het laatste deel. Tijdens de 'Roundup'(het bijeendrijven van het vee) gaat het er spectaculair aan toe.

Roland Kernen has arranged the songs Macht hoch die Tür (Open Wide the Gates), Maria durch ein Dornwald ging (Maria Walks Amid the Thorns) and O Little Town of Bethlehem in his magical Advents-Fantasie. Within thiswork O Little Town of Bethlehem is skilfully used to connect the individual sections. A very varied and beautifully constructed composition to enrich any Christmas programme.

Roland Kernen componeerde een betoverende fantasie op bekende Duitse kerstliederen. U hoort Macht hoch die Tür en Maria durch ein Dornwald ging en tevens O Bethlehem, du kleine Stadt als verbinding tussen de twee andereliederen. Deze originele fantasie is een ideale afwisseling tijdens uw kerstconcert.

In seiner bezaubernden Advents-Fantasie verarbeitete Roland Kernen die Lieder Macht hoch die Tür, Maria durch ein Dornwald ging und O Bethlehem, du kleine Stadt. Dabei setzte er das Lied O Bethlehem, du kleine Stadtgeschickt als Verbindung der einzelnen Teile ein. Ein gelungenes, abwechslungsreiches Werk, das jedes Weihnachtskonzertprogramm bereichert.

Avec Advents-Fantaisie, Roland Kernen signe une oeuvre intense, débordante d'émotions et apportant un immense sentiment de quiétude. Macht hoch die Tür, Maria durch ein Dornwald ging et O Bethlehem, du kleine Stadtsont les trois mélodies réunies dans cet arrangement idéal pour toute programmation du temps de l'Avent et de Noël.

Trimbeka is a composition which owes its existence to the anniversary of music society “de Vlecke” in Gorredijk.
The name Gorredijk originates from “goor” or “gor”, which means : bog. Along the marshy peat ran a “dijk” (the Dutch word for dike), called the Gordijk. The name of the village resembles that of the home town of the composer himself, who comes from a town in Twente called Goor.
Three streams used to run through the area around Gorredijk. the historical name Trimbeets (Trimbeka), meaning three brooks, recalls this to mind.
Gorredijk was a flourishing “Vlecke”, i.e. large village, which was situated on an intersection of important connecting roads.The liveliness which this entailed is one of the distinctive elements in Trimbeka.
Furthermore, ominous sounds possibly refer to the dangers of the bog, while the resonance of the merriment during the annual fair can also be heard. The slow middle movement is an ode to the beautiful landscape surrounding the village.

Trimbeka is een compositie die haar ontstaan dankt aan het jubileum van Muz. Ver. de Vlecke te Gorredijk.
De naam Gorredijk is afkomstig van Goor of Gor, wat moerassige plaats betekent.
Langs het moerassige veengebied liepeen dijk, die Gordijk werd genoemd. De naam van het dorp zorgde voor een band met de componist, die zelf afkomstig is uit het Twentse Goor.
In het gebied rondom Gorredijk stroomden vroeger drie beken. De historische naam Trimbeets(Trimbeka) herinnert daar nog aan. Gorredijk was een bloeiende ‘Vlecke’ (groot dorp) dat op een kruispunt lag van enkele belangrijke verbindingswegen. De levendigheid die dit met zich meebracht is één van de elementen diein Trimbeka terug te horen zijn. Voorts klinken er onheilspellende klanken die een verwijzing kunnen zijn naar het moerasgebied en is er vermaak tijdens de jaarlijkse markt.
Het langzame middendeel is een ode aan de prachtigenatuur.

Composed during the summer of 1988. Commissioned by The Norwegian Brass Band Club First performed in the Grieg Hall¬? at the 10th Anniversary Concert for the Norwegian Championship, Bergen, February 1989. EBML conducted by Michael Antrobus.

The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be played outside Norway. Black Dyke/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991.

The composer:
In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material.

When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) hedescribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius, that revolves(?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well, not a good translation I¬?m afraid).

The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section, I borrowed a folksong-like tune (by C. Elling, a norwegian composer).
The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God. De opening en het slot van dit werk beschrijven 'Circius' de wind die hemel en aarde verwoest.
Het middendeel is een bewerking van het Noorse volkslied 'The fisherman's speech to his son'. De inhoud van het lied komt overeen met Circius. De vader verzoekt zijn zoon de krachten van de natuur te trotseren, maar bovenal te respecteren.
Een kort doch spectaculair concertwerk dat het gehele orkest in de greep heeft.

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

The Golden Age is een programmatische compositie in vier delen. Overtureverklankt de Gouden Eeuw, voor Nederland een periode van grote bloei. Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt’s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

The Golden Age ist eine programmatische Komposition in vier Sätzen über das so genannte “Goldene Zeitalter“ in der Geschichte der Niederlande. In dieser Periode erlebte das Land eine Blütezeit des (Übersee-)Handels, der Kultur und Politik, es befreite sich von der spanischen Herrschaft, brachte Kunstwerke wie Rembrandt’s Nachtwache hervor und entwickelte sich zu einer Kolonialmacht. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Après une guerre qui dura 80 ans, l'Espagne reconnut finalement l'indépendance des Provinces-Unies néerlandaises, qui devinrent alors l’une des plus importantes puissances maritimes et économiques du XVIIe siècle. Cette période est connue sous le nom de Siècle d’or (The Golden Age) et correspond une phase de développement exceptionnel des Pays-Bas tant sur le plan colonial et militaire que sur le plan culturel, intellectuel et artistique.

Dopo una guerra che durò 80 anni, la Spagna riconobbe l’indipendenza delle Province-Unite olandesi che divennero potenze marittime ed economiche del XVII secolo. Questo periodo è conosciuto con il nome di Secolo d’Oro (The Golden Age) e corrisponde ad una fase di sviluppo eccezionale dei Paesi Bassi sia sul piano coloniale e militare, sia sul piano culturale, intellettuale e artistico.
