Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare ‘Prins Hendrik’, from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein’ Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire. Between the Two Rivers werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Fanfare Prins Hendrik uit Aalst. Aalst is een streng gelovige gemeente, dus was heteen voor de hand liggende keuze van Philip Sparke om het beroemde lutherse koraal Een vaste burcht te gebruiken als thema voor een viertal variaties. Variation I is een moto perpetuo, Variation II is langzamer en marsachtig van karakter,VariationIII is een sinister langzaam deel en Variation IV heeft tot slot de vorm van een fuga. Between the Two Rivers zal beslist een belangrijk concertwerk worden in het repertoire van blaasorkesten. Het werk is verplichtgesteld op het Wereld Muziek Concours 2005 te Kerkrade.Philip Sparke wählte sich den berühmten Luther-Choral Ein' feste Burg als Thema für eine Reihe von Variationen. Nach einer kurzen, lebhaften Eröffnung folgen vier abwechslungsreiche Variationen über den Choral. Between the Two Rivers, dessen Name sich auf die zwischen zwei Flüssen liegende, Auftrag gebende Stadt Aals in Holland bezieht, ist ein prachtvolles Werk, in dem alle Register des Blasorchesters zum Zuge kommen. Le titre de cette composition trouve son origine dans le fait que la ville est enserrée entre deux affluents de la rivi¬re Dommel. Aalst est une cité pieuse. La création d'un ensemble de variations sur le th¬me du cél¬bre choral luthérien Ein' feste Burg (C'est un rempart que notre Dieu) s'imposait comme une évidence. This concert march is a tribute to the “pioneers” in the world of brass music in the Lowlands of Netherlands, the original founders of the bands and the people who take the lead in organising the societies and associations in the band movement. Celebrate the joy and friendship of the brass band movement with this truly uplifting march. Een hommage aan de voortrekkers - de ‘pioniers’ - in de wereld van de blaasmuziek in de Lage Landen: de oorspronkelijke oprichters van de orkesten en degenen die steeds weer het voortouw nemen in de organisatie achter de schermenvan de verenigingen en bonden. Deze vrijwilligers zetten zich met hart en ziel in. Soms zijn ze ook nog de spil van families die actief zijn in de verenigingen. Jacob de Haan componeerde Pioneers of the Lowlands ter nagedachtenisvan een van hen, in opdracht van diens familie. De mars wordt gekenmerkt door een krachtig syncopische melodie in mineur, gevolgd door een uitgesproken lyrisch trio in majeur.Dieser Marsch von Jacob de Haan ist geprägt von einer kraftvollen, synkopierten Melodie in Moll, gefolgt von einem besonders lyrischen Trio in Dur. Er ist eine Hommage an alle, die als Pioniere der Musik“ Vereine und Orchester ins Leben gerufen haben und sich oft ehrenamtlich engagieren. Dieser Marsch entstand für einen solchen Pionier aus Holland und wird auch vielen der aktiven und passiven Musikfreunde in Ihrem Konzertsaal aus dem Herzen sprechen.

Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions, largely determined by the characteristic melodies, take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people. Litouwen, de grootste van de drie Baltische staten, is gezegend met een rijk cultureel erfgoed. Componist Jacob de Haan heeft The Heart of Lithuania gebaseerd op vijf volksmelodieën die met name geliefd waren in de tweede helftvan de twintigste eeuw. Hoewel alle vijf de liederen afkomstig zijn uit de Auk¹taitija-regio, zijn ze populair in heel Litouwen, ze worden nog altijd gezongen door jonge mensen in de steden en dorpen. Dit schitterende werk voertde luisteraar rechtstreeks naar de ziel van het Litouwse volk.In The Heart of Lithuania verwendete Jacob de Haan Volkslieder aus Litauen, das trotz seiner relativ geringen Größe doch über ein vielfältiges kulturelles Erbe verfügt. Eine sehr reichhaltige Quelle der Inspiration für Jacob de Haan, der sich fünf traditionelle Lieder, die voller Freude, Hoffnung oder auch Melancholie von der Liebe erzählen, als Basis für seine Komposition wählte. Diese Musik wird den Zuhörer direkt ins Herz des litauischen Volkes führen!La Lituanie est dotée d’un riche patrimoine culturel. Petit territoire situé sur la rive orientale de la mer Baltique, la Lituanie est divisée en cinq régions ethnographiques : la Samogitie, la Haute Lituanie, la Sudovie, la Dzūkija et la Petite Lituanie. Chaque région a son dialecte, son costume traditionnel, ses coutumes, son artisanat, ses fêtes et jours fériés et surtout ses propres chants traditionnels chantés depuis près d’un millénaire. Pour composer The Heart of Lithuania (“Au cœur de la Lituanie”), Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de cinq mélodies traditionnelles particulièrement en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Bien que ces chantsproviennent de Haute Lituanie, ils sont appréciés sur l’ensemble du territoire et sont encore chantés aujourd’hui. Le choix des chants et la diversité des émotions qu’ils expriment travers des lignes mélodiques typées emportent l’auditeur au cœur de l’ me lituanienne.

This major concert work cosists o five movements.1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas, a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals, in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the “Laguna del Shimbe”, one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It’s a proud, beautiful andindependent race, which has never succumbed to domination, not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish, fruit, plants, ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation, they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning “picture”, “soul”, “essence”. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system, their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. “Everywhere the white man goes, he leaves a wilderness behind him”, wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites, the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone,80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias, in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water, painted with redpaint and covered with feathers, after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by, amongst others, the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez, who, murdered in 1988, was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.
