Michael Nyman: Concerto For Violin and Orchestra: Violin: Instrumental Work
Orchestra, Violin
Chester
The Violin Concerto was commissioned by Stiftung Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festiv...
(+)
The Violin Concerto was commissioned by Stiftung Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. It was first performed by Gidon Kremer (violin) and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchester conducted by DennisRussell Davies at the Musikhalle Hamburg Germany on 29 August 2003. Interpolated within this one-minute-one-movement layout is a recurrent refrain where the soloist articulates one of the basic harmonic foundations of anumber of the one minute sections (six dominant 7ths - on E F sharp C A B D) in an undisguised Bachian fashion. The slow arpeggios in the later variants of the refrain not unexpectedly find themselves sharing a bed with theopening of Berg's Violin Concerto. Nyman has effectively adopted Berg's orchestral template with two exceptions - the omission of the alto Saxophone and replaced Berg's Percussion section with Marimba and Vibraphone mallet instruments which intertwine with the soloist in the Concerto. Alban Berg's Violin Concerto was dedicated to 'the memory of an angel' Manon Gropius. Nyman's Concerto was dedicated to the memory of DanielToscan du Plantier a friend and neighbour - in Nyman's words 'certainly no angel but a major figure in the recording and film industries'. Arranged for solo Violin and Piano accompaniment the duration of thiswork is approximately: 25 minutes.

for Violin and Orchestra-Mozart composed the majority of his works for solo String Instruments and Orchestra during the years 1773 1779. Especially important are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and Orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity are partly that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting with all the new compositional techniques acquiredduring his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773.Urtext of the New Mozart EditionFull score and performance material (BA4712) Violin and Piano reduction (BA4712-90) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP20) available for sale. The new Urtext performing editions to Mozartâs Violin concertos nos. 1-5 contain new easy to play Piano reductions. They offer in addition to the Urtext solo Violin part an extra Violin part prepared with bowings and fingerings by M. Wulfhorst.A brochure with cadenzas lead-ins and fermata embellishments by Joseph Joachim Sam Franko Leopold Auer Eugène Ysaye and Martin Wulfhorst is also included.

Violon Et Orchestre

(+)
My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition of a harp and celeste, and lasts around 17 minutes. Although the work sets out to explore the lyrical characteristics of the solo instrument, it is only gradually that the violin finds its full, lyric voice, and thence, as the work progresses, a more dominant role. This, in one sense, is the 'journey' of the piece. The work's straightforward formal scheme consists of three movements (roughly fast-slow-fast) framed by a reflective introduction and epilogue. However, these formal divisions exist within a single, unbroken arc. Such an overall symmetrical shape places the slow Arioso (itself divided into three subsections) at the midpoint, sandwiched between the two Allegro movements. The dramaturgy of the piece centres on a twofold search. First there is the ongoing pursuit to 'recapture' the simple melodic material stated by the solo violin - accompanied by the harp's bass register - during the opening bars. Whilst aspects of this melody are invoked frequently throughout (especially in the violin cadenza which closes the Arioso movement), it is only with the final and most important climax of the work that the melody appears again in its complete form, now accompanied by violent, orchestral stabs. The second search is for a tonal resting place, the arrival of which is delayed until the close of the epilogue. The original version of the Violin Concerto, commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, was premiered in Amsterdam in February 2012 with Gordan Nikolic as soloist. The present, revised version was created for Barnabás Kelemen and the Hallé. The piece is dedicated, with admiration, to my friend Oliver Knussen. (Ryan Wigglesworth) / Violon Et Orchestre

Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility ofexperimenting with all the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773.New straightforward Piano reduction (BA4863-90) with:- Violin solo part with the Urtext of the New Mozart Edition- Additional violin solo part with fingerings bowings and performance comments- Additional booklet with cadenzas and transitions by L. Auer J. Joachim S. Franko E. Ysaÿe M. WulfhorstThis collection offers players a spectrum of styles available in no other publication.

In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim Jelly D?Aranyi in concert in London. Following the performance Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D?Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel?s virtuoso classic ?Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon) the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel laterorchestrated ?Tzigane? and both versions remain a ?must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D?Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel?s masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version complete with full score and performance material as well as in the composer?s earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources including letters have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources consulted for the first time was a copy of ?Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D?Aranyi which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains besides the Urtext part a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D?Aranyi. D?Aranyi?s alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. The cooperation between Ravel and D?Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto.First scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the work Presented are both versions: for violin and orchestra and for violin and pianoIncludes Jelly D?Aranyi?s fingering

Leclair J.m. - Concerto Op.vii N°5 - Violon (flute) Et Orchestre
Orchestra, Violin
