He also produced a version for string orchestra and both were published in 1926. Two years later in 1928 he made this arrangement for full orchestra. This new edition corrects a few minor errors that were present in the 1928 edition published by Curwen and also shows the trumpets in Bb; they were shown in C originally. The six movements which are based on sixteenth century dance tunesare:- Basse-Danse Pavane Tordion Bransles Pieds-en-l´air Mattachins.

However additional parts are included for Flutes Clarinets in Bb Horns and Trombones which double the chorus lines and can be used either to reinforce the choral line or to replace it completely to provide an orchestra-only concert version. One chorus part is included in the orchestral set and additional copies areavailable should they be required. George Butterworth was born in London on July 12th 1885 to a well-to-do family. Eton School was followed by university at Trinity College Oxford where he met Vaughan Williams and Cecil Sharp. He taught for a while at Radley studied for a short time at the Royal College of Music then concentrated more or less full time on collecting folk songs sometimes with Vaughan Williams. When the First World War started in 1914 he joined the Durham Light Infantry as a Lieutenant. In the trenches he was mentioned in dispatches for outstanding courage and won the Military Cross. He led a successful raid on August 15th 1916 in the Battle of the Somme but during the raidButterworth was killed by a sniper's bullet.Much of his music is influenced by folk-song. The idyll 'Banks of Green Willow' is one of his best works and perfectly captures the nature of the English countryside. Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English a classical scholar essayist poet and politician but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon.The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems nature paintings I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety but have chosen the following 3 excerpts all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical

This popular march was written for the film 'The Dam Busters' about the wartime exploits of the R.A.F.'s 617 squadron and their attempts to destroy the dams in Germany's industrial heartland using the 'bouncing bomb' a secret weapon invented by Barnes-Wallis. No secret weapons are required to perform this arrangement just a reasonably able orchestra! Saxophone parts are provided as alternatives (or additions) to the horn parts.
