Gustav Mahler's symphonies tend to be scored for a large orchestra putting this wonderful music out of reach of many smaller orchestras. This arrangement whilst not simplifying the music attempts to remedy this by reducing the orchestral requirements. The original orchestration requires 3 flutes 3 oboes 3 clarinets 3 bassoons 7 horns 4 trumpets 3 trombones tuba timpani percussion and strings. Although in many of Mahler's symphonies each movement seems to be an integral part of the larger work we feel that this movement can stand alone quite happily and offers a good entry to the symphonic world of Gustav Mahler.

This arrangement has been made from the original orchestration for full orchestra and incorporates the cuts authorized by the composer in 1963. The piano duet part is optional unless no wind is available. The brass parts are fully cued in both string and woodwind parts. The minimum wind required is 1 flute 1 oboe and 2 clarinets. Aulis Sallinen’s Symphony No.7 is related to J.R.R. Tolkien’s great novel 'The Lord of the Rings.' The symphony does not actually depict the events in the novel; rather it is a musical expression of the literary atmosphere and poetry. The symphony was commissioned by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and composed in 1995-6. Orchestration: 3 Flutes 3 Oboes 3 Clarinets in B flat 3 Bassoons 4 Horns in F 4 Trumpets in B flat 3 Trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion Celesta Harp Strings. Hardback-Ralph Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 8 for Orchestra. Full score. Orchestration: 2 fl 2 ob 2 cl 2 bn(opt 3rd) 2 hn 2 tpt 3 tbn timp 4 perc [opt 5th] 2 hp cel str. Vaughan Williams wrote Symphony No. 8 between 1953 and 1955 while in his eighties. It is his shortest symphony and considered by many to be his least serious. Aside from a few sombre moments the symphony is optimistic in mood and displays Vaughan Williams' love for exotic and colourful combinations of instruments with a percussion section that he said employs 'all the 'phones and 'spiels known to the composer'. Forthis newly engraved edition editor David Lloyd-Jones has consulted all extant sources and materials to create a score matching the composer's intentions. The full score is completed with Textual Notes and Preface and accompanying orchestral parts are available on hire.

Soloists  should attempt to match the timbres used but should not feel constrained by the  exact choice ofinstruments.COMPOSER’S NOTEThe percussion instruments used in a table of noises in some ways represent the odd things that were on my great uncle Ash’s parlour table that fascinated me as a child. There is even abottle; there was always a milk bottle with the silver top pushed in surrounded by other essentials for his life. From birth he was quite severely handicapped in one of his legs and couldn’t walk too far without his trusty crutch.He kept everything he needed within arm’s length. In the list of instruments for the solo part there’s everything from deep log drum sounds to very high metallic chime sounds. Wood glass metal and a whistle. Mostlysmall-scale things with a large gong behind used sparingly. I think that we managed to keep below 30 instruments in all which I was keen to do. I didn’t want scores of things that are only played once they have to earn theirkeep. I didn’t want to use a marimba but thought that trying to make the xylophone sound in a more expressive way would be more of a challenge. The percussionist sits for much of the time on a Cajon a flamenco instrument which isessentially a wooden box. The player hits the front of the box in various ways rather as you play a conga. As opposed to the earlier chamber work Nightshade which dealt with extremes of high and low pitches and the chamber orchestra composition Second Nightshade a two-fold piece contrasting darkness/anxiety and light/calm Final Nightshade for full symphony orchestra takes us on a journey in which the forces of dark and light struggle - and co-exist - in a predominantly polyphonic web with brooding undertones. The melodic point-of-departure is not surprisingly to be found in either of the two preceding pieces of the Trilogy but in an older piece Corpus Cum Figuris from 1985. Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dk Preface / Programme Note INCONTRI is a kind of orchestral prelude presenting some of the orchestra’s timbral possibilities. The timbres of the instrument groups emerge either clear on their ownor in various blends. There are no doublings between the three main groups – winds strings and percussion – each group maintains its own individual character evenduring the encounters; as in a forest where different kinds of birds continuetheirterritorial song without yielding or altering their signals.The joint musical project is not unlike a Baroque concerto grosso not only in theway the form plays the groups off against each other but also in the musical language itself. Music for Japan is a terrific and rousing composition for orchestra by Peter Sculthorpe written in 1970. The slow yet significant meandering timbre and accent work towards to a middle section for amplified percussion strongly rhythmic and develops into an exciting and inspiring character.
