With Christopher Hogwood’s new edition of Elgar’s much loved Serenade a scholarly-critical edition of the work is now available for the first time. As with other Elgar works modern editions of the Serenade have always suffered from an enormous number of inconsistancies between the score and parts and unclear divisi and unison passages. The editor has clarified these discrepancies drawing on Elgar’s version of the work for Piano four hands (the original version) and the recently discovered autograph manuscript of the first movement. The Chanson de Nuit was originally entitled Evensong though it is difficult to discern any religiosity in the work. And although published in 1897 scholars suggest that these works may have been written in the 1880’s. The contrast of the two melodies which Elgar then intertwines yield a satisfying short work especially with the composer’s fine Orchestration.Elgar published the Chanson de Nuit and its partner Chanson de Matin at the time of his life when he was also creating the Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius. This work was originally created as a Violin and Piano duet but Elgar then Orchestrated the work and it was presented at the Proms. Sincethen other arrangements have been created.

Elgar did not compose his first symphony until 1908 at the age of fifty although he had been planning it for many years. This work was quickly hailed as the first great English symphony and enjoyed success in Britain America Austria Canada Australia and Germany; it was performed some one hundred times within a year of its premiere.Available here is a miniature score of Elgar’s Symphony No.1 in A flat Op.55 which is ideal for study and perusal use.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto Op.85 from 1919 was the last major work of this great English composer. It is a particularly complex but immediately moving work making an appropriate epilogue to Elgar's career and life. A touching creation of dillusion and compassion at times unstable but vibrant and colourful throughout. Of Elgar's five Pomp and Circumstance Marches the first in D is the best known as it includes Land of Hope and Glory. Richard Rodney Bennet’s Symphony No. 3 commissioned for the 1987 Three Choirs Festival by the Elgar Foundation with additional funds from West Midlands Arts is now published in a facsimile study score.In contrast with his first two symphonies which were rather extrovert display pieces Symphony No. 3 is quite thoughtful and lyrical in nature more or less monothematic and has a strong feeling of tonality particularly at the opening and closing of the score.
