The first performance of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio “Messiah” on 13 April 1742 in Dublin aroused unqualified rapture. A newspaper report a few days later declared that it combined “the Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender”. Its success has remained undiminished ever since, and the “Messiah” has taken its place in musical life. In 2009, to mark the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, the British Library and Bärenreiter joined forces and made the autograph score of the “Messiah” available to the public in a meticulously reproduced, lavishly published facsimile. The renowned Handel scholar Donald Burrows introduces the characteristics of Handel’smanuscript, describes the history of the work’s composition, and explains the differences between later versions of the “Messiah”, as reflected in the conducting scores. A two-page sketch from the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge completes the publication. Par BARTOK BELA. With the “ Concerto for Orchestra , ” Henle inaugurates a series of affordable study scores based on the text of the Bartók Complete Edition. When Bartók received the commission to compose this piece from Serge Koussevitsky in May 1943, it meant not only financial support, but also an important creative impetus for the gravely ill composer. By October, the five-movement concerto, which Koussevitsky enthusiastically dubbed “the best orchestral work of the last 25 years, ” was already complete. The first performances in the winter of 1944–45 were also very successful. Nevertheless, Bartók was moved to set down an alternate ending, which thecomposer, who passed away in September 1945, would never be destined to hear. Bartók specialist Klára Móricz includes both versions in her edition and summarises the history and transmission of the “Concerto for Orchestra” in a fascinating foreword. It is important to remember that risque music was considered more daring and controversial than today and audiences at its 1875 debut were resistant to its unconventional charms, but it eventually became a crowd pleaser. Havanaise is among the most challenging of violin and orchestra pieces, but a standard showpiece in the repertoire of every serious violinist. Based on the Cuban dance, Habanera, the 1887 work features a languid mood, highlighted by bursts of virtuoso activity. Symphonic Etudes. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Many of Rodion Shchedrin’s compositions are distinguished by deeply Slavonic feeling and thrilling virtuoso displays. Even though Shchedrin has won recognition all over the world for his work, he remains an essentially Russian composer who has not broken off his ties to Russian musical folk traditions and poetry. Dvorák, Antonín Concerto for Violin and Orchestra A minor op. 53 This study score is based on our recently published new scholarly-critical edition (BA 10422) of Dvorák?s op. 53, his only violin concerto. Besides the original print, the edition takes into account Dvorák?s autograph, which served as a model for the engraving. Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work forpublication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat theautograph as a subordinate source. Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword and a detailed Critical Commentary. Like its companions Nos. 90 and 91, Haydn's Symphony #92 in G major was written in 1789. All three symphonies were commissioned in 1788 by Prince Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein, who was to be granted exclusive ownership. However, Haydn first sold the works to the Parisian Masonic lodge Société Olympique and was thus unable to fulfil his obligation to send the autograph scores to the prince. The symphony received its nickname 'Oxford? in the 19th century, probably in connection with a performance that took place when Haydn received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1791. / Orchestre

In 1803 Beethoven wrote his Third Symphony and, as is widely known, it was originally in honour of Napoleon Bonaparte. Yet it was published three years later with a dedication to Beethoven's patron Prince Lobkowitz as well as with the addition 'Sinfonia Eroica? in memory of a 'grand Uomo?. This presumably - reflecting the changed political situation - referred to the Prussian Prince Louis Ferdinand who died on the battlefield against Napoleon.
