Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a continuous orchestral score of approximately 14 minutes comprising two outer fast sections and a slower inner section of a dream-like character. The work is directly inspired by the film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902), written and directed by the pioneering French film-maker, Georges Méliès. Méliès was influenced by 19th century interests in science and discoveries, as well as the science fiction of Jules Verne. At the same time his work seems fantastic, surreal and satirical. Some critics point out an underlying critique of colonial adventuring. The plot centres on a group of astronomers who decide to launch a rocket to the moon containing a handful of their number. They reach the moon (famously landing on the moon’s face) and then encounter a strange race of aliens, whom they battle and destroy. The return to earth involves a dramatic descent, a plunge into the ocean and then celebratory dancing. The film inhabits a surreal and dream-like space, and uses an idiosyncratic visual language which transforms reality. This inspired an active musical response in my own score, which is by turns abrupt, smooth, lyrical and violent, and expresses something of the strange shifting surfaces and multiple and layered tempos evident in the film. The canons in the horns in the first scene reflect the intense arguments of the astronomers as they consider the project. The slower inner section is inspired by the scenes of the industrial City viewed from its rooftops by the astronomers. It also expresses the wonder of the astronomers as they see the earth rise from the perspective of the moon after their arrival there. The music of the final section is in places conflicted, reflecting the violent encounters with the moon’s inhabitants. It moves into a more harmonious phase at the close to match the celebrations upon the astronomers’ return from their adventuring. The music could be considered to be a surreal mini-opera without voices, voicing instead the characters of the silent screen. - Ed Hughes.

Libretto by James Fenton
In a make-believe world, based loosely on Bombay and Kashmir, the story of Haroun is a tale of a fight between the free imagination and the powers that oppose it. Haroun's father, Rashid, the Shah of Blah, is a professional and gifted story-teller, a popular figure much in demand at public events. Feeling neglected, his wife is persuaded to leave him and run away with a neighbor. After this, Rashid loses confidence in his powers of story-tellling, haunted by his son's question: 'What's the use of stories that aren't even there?' Rashid is due to speak at a political rally to be held by the sinister politician, Snooty Buttoo. He is told that if he does not come up with his usual fund of tales, his tongue will be cut out. As Rashid despairs, Haroun determines to rescue his father's talent - a project in which he learns that the Ocean of the Sea of Stories, the source of all stories, is being polluted by the enemy of all stories, the evil Khattam Shud. In a series of brilliant imagined adventures, Haroun succeeds in defeating the powers of darkness, and restoring happiness to his family, and to the city where he lives.
Salman Ruishdie's children's book, written in the aftermath of the fatwa, has an effervescent style which is full of rhymes and wordplay. The libretto stays very close to the spirit of the original, conjuring up a fantasy world in which, nonetheless, one never loses sight of harsh political reality and the great issues of freedom of speech and imagination. -- James Fenton, 1998

New edition of this enigmatic, single-movement work for full orchestra lasting 13 minutes and dating from the early-1930s. In his preface, Gerard McBurney comments that, Despite the music's modernist surface, the Chant symphonique's 'three closely integrated movements' correspond rather neatly to a traditional sonata-form exposition, development and recapitulation. There is even an overall tonality of sorts - D major. But 'parts', 'moods', keys and cadences are all subjected in this unusual work to tremendous pressure and distortion, so that we quickly begin to suspect that something other, different and more mysterious, is really going on here..

Written to help students understand the concept of positions, this entire piece can be played by the violins, violas, and cellos in 3rd position with no shifting! Playing in positions is often a challenging hurdle for many young musicians yet an important prerequisite for advanced techniques. The rhythms are kept very simple so students can focus on playing in a new way. With a dark, mature sound and named after an ancient Roman border river, this piece allows plenty of room for expression. To cross the Rubicon is to pass a point of no return and enter into a new realm. This work is both a valuable teaching tool for a new musical adventure and a thrilling concert piece that students will be excited to show off in concert. (1:45).

Using all the colors of the string orchestra, this charming Spanish-flavored piece features melodic material for every instrument. Two contrasting tunes, one for high voices and one for low, are introduced and then woven together. Including all the basic characteristic 6/8 rhythms, this is a perfect way to introduce your students to this too-often neglected meter. Some fun hand-clapping accompaniment, a violin solo, and a duet for first stand violins add interest and variety to this selection in a genre that has become a real favorite with students and audiences! Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. It is a matter of debate whether or not this Symphony no. 85, “La Reine†(“The Queenâ€), was really given its nickname because it was the favorite symphony of Marie-Antoinette. The name certainly did not stem from Haydn, but it was nevertheless stated on the title page of the edition published by Imbault in Paris as early as 1788. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. One of his most enjoyable compositions is The Mannheim Rocket, commissioned by the Mannheim orchestra in the year 2000. It takes inspiration from theRocket of the title – a famous compositional device invented by the orchestra in the 1700s. From there it swiftly traverses 200 years of German music, cleverly hiding quotes from some of the most famous orchestralworks of the era, rising to its zenith before falling back to earth – exactly as a real rocket would.
Described by the composer as a “marvellous journey”, this orchestral piece is one of the mostentertaining in the repertoire – both to play and to listen to.

César Franck, composer, pianist, organist and music teacher, completed Cupid and Psyché, his sixth and last symphonic poem in 1887. It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoseswritten in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psyché et Érosis positioned at the end of the second part. Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors.

Franz Schubert wrote the two movements of the Unfinished Symphony in October 1822. The torso has since been posing riddles to posterity, which first learned of the existence of this masterpiece in 1865 through the simultaneous first edition and world-premiere performance. There seems to have been no external reason for its creation. Did Schubert really consider the piece only as an experiment that did not warrant any continuation? It should be noted, however, that Schubert sketched the Scherzo up to the beginning of the Trio, and even fully orchestrated nine measures of this movement.

The present volume contains five orchestral works, which Sibelius composed in 1904-1910: Die Dryade (Op. 45 No. 1), Musik zu einer Szene [Op. 45 No. 2/1904], Tanz-Intermezzo (Op. 45 No. 2), Pohjolas Tochter (Op. 49), and Pan und Echo (Op. 53a). An early version of Tanz-Intermezzo is included as an appendix. In addition, a fragment illustrating the unrealized plan of a symphonic poem called Luonnotar, which Sibelius reworked into Pohjolas Tochter, appears as a facsimile. Musik zu einer Szene is now published for the first time. Except for Pohjolas Tochter, all the works were composed for a choreographic purpose, (sub-)titled or referred to as dance intermezzos, or related to opus 45.

Stratoscape, by Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis, is a colorful and contrasting work for wind orchestra, depicting the view of our earth as seen from the stratosphere. This voyage into the sky is pictural, but also metaphorical, as it is also about distancing from our world. The work is divided into five sections: I Ignition!, II Broadness & The Big Blue, III Stars Shining from Down to Above, IV Destructive Forces, V One and Only Home Five contrasting movements, starting with Ignition in which Gauthier Dupertuis tries to musically convey the majesty of our planet seeing if from the atmosphere, ending with One and Only Hope, as the title say, a message of hope. In between three movements that depict the broadness of the landscapes of our planet (second movement), the fragility of our earth at night with only the stars shining (third movement). But also sheer reality in the fourth movement when the composer translates into music the damage caused toour planet by us human beings. Stratoscape: a fantastic view of Planet Earth!

“In early 2006 I was commissioned to write a piece to be premiered in a church. Before beginning work on it, I tested the acoustics there, according to which the compositional concept developed. Somewhat later I began to compose the piece 'with the church', so to speak. During the process of composition, however, the music gradually distanced itself from the original spatial conditions and developed into a piece whose characteristics were transformed into a church-acoustical structure. 'I see your music when I hear it', a listener once said to me. Does one really see the music? Can fragrances be heard? Or can one smell colours? This 5-part composition is music in which the tones move in space on different levels, even when they are sometimes very quiet and slow; they are clear and transparent even when they are apparently dense, complicated and energetic.†(Xiaoyong Chen).

A rewarding extension to the repertoire Friedrich Schneider, remembered in the music world almost entirely through his oratorio Das Weltgericht (The Last Judgment), bequeathed at his death in 1853 an oeuvre of over 1000 works, among them 23 symphonies. Breitkopf & Hartel, whose association with Schneider began as early as 1805, is now publishing for the first time an edition of his Symphony No. 16. The symphony composed in 1818 is impressive proof that outside of Vienna the romantic symphony was also developing then. To this day Schneider's extensive symphonic works are almost completely unknown. Inviting us to rediscover him, the work offers a welcome and valuable repertoire extension in the realm of the early romantic symphony.A contemporary of Beethoven, Schneider's soundworld is not a million miles away from the great man's. He is on frisky form in his 16th symphony. (Jeremy Pound, BBC Music Magazine).

The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. The Editorial Report gives detailed information on the provenance and evaluation of the sources as well as authentic annotations on performance practice. Individual comments document editorial interventions and deviations from current editions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement. Beautiful, original melodies abound in all sections, but the violas and cellos really get a chance to shine in this suite comprised of three movements: River Hymn, Waltz of the Hills, and Barn Dance. In C Major, this piece is ideal to teach F and C natural. The movements are brief and can be performed individually or as a suite. Remaining true to the early Americana feel of the piece, the last movement is an upbeat, old-timey tune! Correlates to Sound Innovations Book 2, Level 2. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
