Mendelssohn's St. Paul with just seven instead of the usual 18 wind instruments? Thanks to this arrangement for chamber orchestra, a performance with smaller forces is now possible, and presents an attractive alternative for performing Mendelssohn's first oratorio - not only in times of Corona. For it is often considerations of space, a limited budget, or the size of the chorus which call for flexibility in scoring.The arrangement is based on the Carus Urtext edition. By reducing the symphonic wind and brass in particular, the volume of sound is more restrained, but nevertheless the symphonic character and a wide dynamic range are retained. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal scores, choral scores, and practice aids of the existing Carus edition can still be used. First publication of Finzi's orchestral versions of: Lo, the full, final sacrifice op 26 - festival anthem for chorus & orchestra (14 minutes); Magnificat op 36 - for soloists (ad lib), chorus & orchestra (9 minutes); God is gone up op 27 - anthem for chorus, string orchestra & organ (4 minutes); Let us now praise famous men op 35 - choral song for tenors & basses (or sopranos & altos), string orchestra & piano (3 minutes). The first three works as listed are, in their original organ versions, established in the English cathedral repertoire. Lo, the full, final sacrifice was orchestrated for the 1947 Gloucester Three Choirs Festival, thus bringing the work into the mainstream British choral society repertoire. The preface by Andrew Burn (Finzi Trust) gives details of the commission, composition and orchestration of each work.

Weakened by a series of chronic illnesses and aware of his impending death, Shostakovich looks back on his life in Symphony No.15 inA major, op.141. The work opens with cheerful reminiscences from his youth, featuring quotations from his early works and allusions to Rossini. But already by the second movement, a funeral march rich with self-quotation, the mood changes. In the cantabile movement which follows, one hears the murmuring ghosts of the past. With echoes of Richard Wagner, the eerie finale ultimately instructs the listener to remain fearful through its crumbling tonality. This volume is part of the revised and corrected new edition of all 15 symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich published by Boosey & Hawkes and Sikorski as large format study scores for optimal legibility.
