Edited by the Deutscher Musikrat (German Music Council) with Richard Mailander and Kord MichaelisCatholic and Protestant churches are familiar with the tradition that in times of crisis, new works are composed to comfort the faithful, and are performed in worship. Following in this tradition, the project Orgelmusik in Zeiten von Corona (Organ Music in Times of Corona) was devised. 17 new compositions were commissioned which reflect Corona times, creatively confront the past and the present, and will enrich the repertoire of organ music in a lasting way.The 17 compositions depict a wide range of styles including avant-garde, jazz and classical, and some refer to music from previous eras and church music traditions. They are conceived for different levels of difficulty, are for 2 or 3-manual organs, and last between four and ten minutes. They are particularly suitable for concerts, but can also be played in church services.* 17 thematic reflections on the Corona pandemic: on the horsemen of the apocalypse, the Coeur bleu, the thunder of time, timelines, trust and confidence, and many more* compositions by Timo Bocking, Kathrin A. The fourth volume of the section of the Reger Edition devoted to his organ works comprises, in chronological order, the chorale preludes composed between October 1893 and November 1914 in Wiesbaden, Weiden, Munich, Leipzig, and Meiningen. The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). As almost no other composer at the turn of the century, he dedicated himself to the chorale prelude, composing around 100 works in this genre. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

The dance is introduced in 6/8 against 2/4 time, before the exposition of a festive theme that alternates bouncing light passages with percussive chords. A more lyrical central episode precedes the recapitulation. The Basque fandango ends always with another dance step: 'Arin Arin' in 2/4, which is here characterized by scales, continuing the piece's joyful and vivacious character.

Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731500.

First published in 1962, this WLP classic by Russell Woollen has certainly endured the test of time. This flexible composition deserves a twenty-first–century audience. The composer has suggested several options for performance of this setting of the Good Shepherd passage from John: two-part men, two-part women, or two-part mixed voices.
