The oldest extant organ music manuscripts in Transylvania date from the end of the 17th century and are attributableto Daniel Croner. During his student years, Croner compiled two organ tablature books, one in Breslau in 1681, theother in Wittenberg in 1682, a third, supposedly compiled in Kronstadt in 1675 and a fourth book, dating from 1685. The manuscripts are in good condition. They are written inGerman organ tablature and contain works by Croner as weil as by other contemporaries.

Originally composed for oboe and organ (Schott, ED 22863), this work was premiered in Kronach, where Lucas Cranach was born, in March 2017.

There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes' text sections. The so called ,,Neumeister-Chorale are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ,,Neumeister-Sammlung should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. Breitkopf has given the world a splendid edition of the organ works of Bach. These final two volumes offer a wealth of chorale-based music benefiting from the very latest research. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass.

At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach's church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Heinrich Scheidemann is regarded as one of the most influential organists of the 17th century. His most significant achievement lies within his further developing of his teacher J. P. Sweelinck's chorale arrangements into a wide-ranging chorale fantasia primarily to display in full the organ's sound. The present volume constitutes a complete edition of all nine Chorale Fantasias based on Lutheran chorales that, except for one, are extant as individual works. The authenticity of six fantasias is considered certain, with the attribution of the three anonymously transmitted works being based on the source situation and style. The repertoire as a whole provides an insight into the progressive development of the chorale fantasia and concurrently represents Scheidemann's three main creative phases.
